Saw all on blu ray. Didn't understand what all the negative fuss was over the first season of the new show. Have yet to watch second

I liked the '97 series and the movie trilogy, but I wasn't feeling the 2016 series.

but maybe it's because I watched the series as it aired, because I heard the animation quality improved with the Blu-ray release.

Gungrave is really like Berserk, and I definitely recommend it (it's on Hulu), but it's crime-drama/sci-fi.

if you do watch it, don't let the first episode turn you off.

but if you're looking for a medieval, fantasy series, I hear that Claymore is worth checking out.

Vinland Saga is also really good, but it's more historical fiction that's inspired by real people. it's a great Viking revenge tale, though.

I've been trying to find a dark fantasy anime set in ancient japan for years and all i can come up with is the ninja scroll series

You might like Claymore.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes if you have the patience.

oh, then you should check out Dororo, the version that came out a year or two ago.

it's a medieval/ancient, dark fantasy anime that's set in Japan, with a lot of action.

Gungrave was a total bait and switch for me. I was expecting Trigun or something. The cover shows a guy with guns and a cowboy hat and some super cyborg humans fighting him.

Then you get 24 episodes about some gangsters rising up through the ranks of a mafia syndicate and 2 episodes of fighting the superhumans

Claymore was decent. Not quite as good, but it's a decent runner up.

Apparently I should really check out claymore lol

I've seen a bit of gungrave and it's a bit too.. I dunno I don't like the character

Also I liked Vampire Hunter D and the og Ninja Scroll. I can't make myself like light hearted anime unless it's a jrpg for whatever reason
