I'm just saying "C'est la vie" is toxic and that the American system is not set up for change. Moderate and compromising doesn't change the world. Presidential elections are not set up in a way to do that. Pendulum swinging is inevitable. There isn't room for enough diverse opinions in government.

Okay? Democracy isn't perfect and slow and autocracies are only as good as who happens to find themself at the top. choose your poison

I'll take gridlock over the chance of a sociopath calling all the shots personally

I agree. We can't do anything about the British crown OR racial segregation. It is what it is.

The last time the Brits tried to end the monarchy it did not end well for them.

Racial segregation & Apartheid were ended democratically through voting even in broken systems.

They ended because people stopped taking it. The broken systems allowed those things in the first place. It took hundredsa of years to convince a majority of white people that black people were human beings and that it benefited them to treat them as such.

Yes. And if you want it to be shorter than hundreds of years, you can't afford to waste time by not voting because someone on the ballot failed your purity test.

"Less bad than Trump" is the enemy of "halfway decent". If the system is broken, then there is no point in trusting it.

I want it to be shorter than 10 years. I want things to change yesterday.

A kick in the balls is better than having your limbs sawn off, but I'm not choosing if I can abstain from either.

You can't abstain from either. You're going to be kicked in the balls or have your limbs sawn off either way; the only thing not voting is going to do is forfeit your chance to vote for the least bad.

It sucks, but that's what it is. The change needs to happen by getting big money and corporate lobbyists out of politics, and that needs to happen before the candidates are even chosen.

Everyone wants that. But you have to build a house one brick at a time. Whining that the house isn't already there doesn't do anything helpful and just leaves you homeless and cold.

I can and I will. I will find a way to survive without debasing myself by supporting someone I don't like.

Why would the system ever let that happen? Again, let's drop all pretense and completely eliminate any illusion of democracy if we're going to shame people into picking the less bad of 2. Just pick two assholes and stick a gun to everyone's head.

How many times are we going to watch the house be demolished mid-construction before we realize it's deliberate?

I agree, the system won't ever let that happen. The people will need to find a way to make the change. However that will take time, think of all the damage another Trump term will do to the US. At least the Democrats are pretending to give half a shit about your country.

Our (individual) votes have virtually no value, even in swing states! We only place such outsized value on voting because of our deranged notions of individualism and personal responsibility. And both parties are deeply invested in painting a vote for the Greens/Libertarians as a vote for the Republicans/Democrats respectively.
I, for one, live in CT. It literally doesn't matter who I vote for, Biden is going to win CT. So I'm going to take my ceremonial exercise of democracy and tell him and Trump to...*numerous TOS violations*, because, while it won't make any difference, at least I will feel marginally better about it.

The people deliberately destroying the house are doing so by voting democratically to have the house destroyed.

The only way the house will ever get built will be if enough people vote to not destroy it.

Once the house is built, we can vote on making improvements to it, but the first step is still to build a house.

Yeah, I live in a red state so it's not like it matters anyway. But, as of today, Biden has lost my vote. Him and KH will have to do a lot of work to convince me again.

This is literally bullshit and people need to stop saying this. Winner take all does not mean your votes have no value. Even in a loss, a close enough election can help future prospective politicians identify where they can make a change big enough to win things.

And how many more generations will that convincing take? It's really hard to have optimism in anything resembling the norm when Donald Trump happened 250 years in.

When will the system choose to destroy itself?

By voting in the people who want to change the system. There's none on the presidential ballot this year but many congressmen and local politicians want electoral reform and while you're voting for them you may as well vote for Biden since he will help those people win even if he does not share your goals.
