Dusk and Doom have one big thing in common in terms of level design, that where you're fighting is as memorable as what you're doing. So many of Dusk's levels stand out as characters on their own, with variety, uniqueness, and ultimately fun making the levels extremely memorable.

Compare that to Doom 2016 and Eternal. Both extremely good games, but unfortunately the environments are largely forgettable arenas, with the focus being solely on the enemies and combat. Most games seem to have missed the point that when Half-Life started slowing down the gameplay with scripted sequences, it was to introduce memorable events and areas.

Uncharted is the only modern AAA shooter I can think of filled with memorable locations, and even then, especially in the first game, it's filled with a lot of firefights in bland areas with lots of cover.

It's more than just being linear, though. Compare the levels in Duke 3d and expansions to DNF. Near every dn3d level has a unique character with several super memorable areas. DNF levels are just bland, focusing only on the gameplay.

Dusk and Amid Evil are amazing. The new Dooms have interesting levels as well imo.
