Honestly, growing up I actually loved rap of the 80s and 90s.

Unpopular opinion, but I feel the past couple of decades (and most recently) has produced nothing but absolute trash.

There's some good ones out there now. A lot of bad, and a lot of people doing the exact same thing, but theres still definitely some good out there.

Key Glock has become one of my favorites and it seems hes really just been around a couple years. Pop Smoke was another, rip, but damn that dude was gonna be big.

Yet, modern rap and music as a whole is being downloaded and streamed billions of times over. So for it being as trash as a lot of people say it is, lots of people are sure listening to it.

I dont get why people have to also announce that they hate something, no one asked if you prefer the rap music of today or the rap music of the 80s/90s...dont like it, dont listen.

I get it, I like music from Playboi Carti and Juice World, but I wouldn't necessarily say it's deep or even good music. The biggest problem though is kids these days dont have a concept of what good rap is.

I mean even back when I was a kid I knew shit like Lil John was garbage rap music even if I did enjoy the music.

The introduction of the SoundCloud rapper destroyed modern rap for me.

It was bad enough with the ringtone rappers of the late 00s. But there where still enough of the older rappers putting out great music to outweigh the crap artists at the time.

All the older dudes either stopped making music or they suck now, leaving us with mostly a bunch of modern weirdos.

All my opinion of course.

rap more than a lot of other genres has evolved very rapidly. People saying 80s/90s was the last good rap is akin to old people saying music hasnt been good since the 60s

not bashing you, tc, just pointing out that its changed very rapidly and that is likely why it seems so unlike the rap you grew up with/enjoy

I disagree with this sentiment, too

we live in an era where all music ever is readily accessible to nearly everyone

what this means is, there are people who like all kinds of music, and thus all kinds of music are still being made. If you want 80s/90s sounding stuff thats new, its out there

its sort of the same as the rock world. People claim rock is dead... well no, rock is thriving right now, the good bands just arent being played on the radio stations you listen to

i agree with you wholeheartedly. but im assuming tc doesnt seek out much modern rap beyond what he hears on the radio/in the mainstream. and that is really the part of the genre that has evolved. and when people say the mainstream version of ___ is trash now, it means that they just dont like that evolution. to insinuate that its worse in any objective manner is pretty silly and immature.

I found myself disliking most stuff that came after Master P got super popular with the Ghetto D album. That's not to say that I didn't like anything that came out after that, just that the percentage of what I like has gone down.
I think it's mostly just that it lacks the sound I like. I prefer G-funk and hardcore and there just isn't a ton of hip-hop that sounds like that right now.

It tends to be more about atmosphere these days. IMO, there's nothing wrong with that at all, but I understand how artists like Migos and Young Thug aren't to everyone's taste.

I recommend checking out Oddisee and Roc Marciano - they're two of my favorite examples of the old craft being kept alive. Also, while she's definitely new-school, I firmly believe Megan Thee Stallion is legit across the board.

There is good and bad but this trend of kids first beat they made in default fruity loops and cribbing shit from nursery rhymes on xylaphone needs to end. Was kinda neat for the first 5 that did it now its an overdone trend that gets by on calling back to the innocence of childhood giving shit a bunch of artifical depth.

There's still plenty of good rap music being produced but you have to sort through a lot of garbage. Many people nowadays want to become rappers and it's a lot easier to make a rap song compared to other genres of music so the entry level is low. I personally know well over a dozen people from my graduating high school class making rap music and trying to earn a living by doing so even though almost all of them do not have any skill or talent. With the age of Soundcloud, I imagine it's like this with today's youth in many communities.

Now more than ever, young people are chasing the dreams of being a rapper, influencer, streamer, etc.

It's a lot harder to find good music among the constant crap, nowadays. It used to be you knew the mainstream, and then indie was a bit of a dig to find stuff, good or bad.

Now there's a billion soundcloud rappers that all suck, and you have to wade through them to find anything decent.

Yup. But they usually unintentionally just make a topic for hip hop fans to chat with each other and bond over the music. So, the jokes on them.

Btw. I feel like Electronic music hasn't been good since the 90s either. I mean, I can't reference one song and I've never paid attention to it or even know if it existed in the 90s. But I still feel like my opinion might be way more valuable than the majority of people who do. I don't understand why people still make music I no longer listen to or ever did.

You don't have to listen to those rappers to listen to the other rappers, if you don't want to. You can just go straight to a different subgenre of hip hop.

I actually do find a lot of good like that, just... not for rap?

I go through phases where I don't listen to rap for months, suddenly youtube recommends Biggie and it's like "oh fuck this is so good why don't i listen to more"

then I listen to all the oldhead stuff, and slightly less old stuff, and then it's like
