  • All free accounts and unregistered viewers can only view the first 15 minutes of a video before it abruptly ends with a message to get a Premium account if they want to see the rest of it. However, this doesn't apply to official videos that are purchased.
  • Free accounts can also only view videos in up to 480p quality, with the higher options locked behind the Premium paywall.
  • The above also applies to free accounts' own uploads.
  • Despite the above, videos can still have ads in them in arbitrary places.
  • The site now has a very stubborn anti-adblocking script that prevents any video from being played if it detects that the system is using an adblocker. In extreme cases, it can even lead to the account associated with the IP address of the system being banned.
How quickly could a competitor rise up to combat the YouTube giant?

Cpt_Pineapple posted...
are they actually implementing this or is this hypothetical?
Hypothetical, but it wouldn't surprise me if they considered doing something similar down the line. Especially if there's still no competition to keep them in check.

Their ad and monetization policies on free content are already driving their creators and viewers nuts. If they do any major money-making 'overhauls' in the next year or two, they're going to lose a huge portion of their big names to a competitor of some kind. Hell, some of them are rich enough through YouTube to create their own site to compete.

YouTube has to keep the vast majority of their content free so they can show everyone enough ads to break even. The exponential storage space they use requires it.

streamers will just stick to twitch. uh...dailymotion? i guess would get popular for posting videos.

isn't youtube the most popular site out there outside of google and i think some chinese search engine? i think it's more popular than facebook. they make a lot off of ads. i can see them blocking adblockers. they have youtube red or whatever but not sure if they're really doing much with that. i never really hear about it and it did have kobra kai but that's going to netflix now so kinda seems like they gave up on it.

It would kill it.

Knowing them, they would have multiple tiers of premium

5 bucks a month would still be full of unskippable ads, and gate you off from some content.

10 Bucks would be ad free, but vids capped at 1080, no downloads, locked off from some deluxe content.

Big tubers would sign deals to make exclusive videos just for the 15 dollar a month users. at this level you get 4k, downloads, everything the site has to offer. Throw in some pointless fluff like chat emoticons and "exclusive" looks into streaming that nobody cares about.
