The word "Lucifer" is just Latin for Venus in the morning. It is one of the last celestial bodies in the early morning, hence "morning star". The original Hebrew passage was a reference to a king of Bablyon (I think) who had a myth about an early morning star. The Latin translation did not know about this myth but managed to make a good analogue.
tl;dr: Lucifer is an appropriate name for a telescope and nice reference.

And also since it literally means "light-bringer", it's even more appropriate.

A quick search tells me that the Vaticans telescope is called VATT (Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope). Lucifer is part of the Large Binocular Telescope, and is located right next to VATT.
