Like the game companies put out the leaks themselves to start some unofficial hype?

Yes. I know for sure so many of them were done to gauge public opinion, and changes were made after the fact. Sonic 4 comes to mind. It leaked in full, got bad reviews, and Sega changed some of Sonics physics and added a completely different level to the final game. The leak was clearly in house.

That's why announcement events need to be more like that Devolver digital expo thing on Steam. Everyone pre-loads it then it unlocks at a certain time so everyone can experience it without encountering leaks. They could also do some really cool reveals with that medium.

Yup. It's usually an employee who will then be punished behind closed doors. Whips, chains, ect.
