I looked further into it and found out Zoe wasn't the first choice. She came in after Mary J Blige declined. As long as Blige didn't didn't do what Saldana did there would be less of an issue since she's an actual singer and actress.

This topic isn't about someone being a terrible choice, it's about someone getting flak for not being black enough to play a black character. Whether you agree or not with the sentiment, at least be honest about what the topic is actually about.

From a cultural standpoint Obama was more white than black. Having been raised by white people and going to historically white, privileged institutions. So I can see the argument people are making with that, but I am not a fan of whatever you call this current zeitgeist of trying to force people into identity boxes and fighting over who is or isn't some social construct. So I can understand why people say this actress isn't black enough or Obama was white, but I am not a fan of this line of thinking at all.

I wish Saldana and others in a similar position did not feel they have to apologize, but Im guessing she understands that not doing so could possibly jeopardize other movie roles. Either that, or she started drinking the full Kool Aid pitcher since 2013.

I think her apology works on two levels, first it appeases the people who tried to "cancel" her, secondly it makes everyone aware of those same people who were telling her being half black is not black enough.

Don't blame quarantine for this. Prejudice against light skinned black people or mixed race people for not being "black enough" is hardly new. Both Storm actresses got some backlash over it for example.

But these days miscasting is now seen as a reinterpretation of the source material. Hollywood cares more for the directors own personal vision than it does being accurate to the source material.

Darker skinned women have often been erased from media in favor of lighter counterparts. Lupita Nyong'o will be the first to tell you about it

A nina simone biopic was a perfect opportunity to push back against such exclusion, which is why Saldana being cast was particularly hurtful. My mom loves Nina Simone and she was piiiised
