Board 8 > Which DS game should I get?

Hey, Board 8. I'm trying to get through DS games I missed back in the day, having recently played TWEWY, Hotel Dusk and Rhythm Heaven. There's so many games for this system and they ain't all cheap, so thought I'd ask here which ones are worth trying to go for. This isn't an exhaustive list, it's just cult ones I know about and entries I missed in series I like. Thanks for any input!

Advance Wars Dual Strike, easily. A lot of those other games including Ghost Trick which is great have seen rereleases. Dual Strike is the pinnacle of the Advance Wars series imo and the most solid DS game all around. Plus theres an insane amount of content.

I haven't played all of those but I'll vouch for Dual Strike and Shadow Dragon (and Apollo Justice to a lesser extent).

Also Dark Dawn isn't great.

Voted Golden Sun, but afterwards saw that Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon was there.
I'll vote Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon.

Also, good luck, that game is really expensive these days....well at least the boxed copy.

Ghost Trick running away with it! Cool to see the love spread around pretty widely though, I'm gonna try and get around to most of them at some point. And lol at the Ace Attorney game having no votes on this of all boards, must be real bad.

Is the 3DS game not preferable for this? This game's somewhat on my radar but I don't know much about it.

If you love the original FFIV, the DS version is definitely worth playing. But this topic keeps has reminded me I need to watch an LP of Ghost Trick.

I've never played any form of FFIV! I figured they'd put 1-6 on Switch at some point but no luck so far.

Ghost Trick is slightly overrated, I think. Still good though.

Dual Strike is great though. I'd go for that.

EBA by far is the best game on the DS

If you can, play ouendan 1 and 2 as well

Welp, turns out Ghost Trick and 999 aren't the cheapest/easiest games to find on DS. Might well end up getting Dual Strike or EBA first!

Oh man I voted for Ghost Trick which is great but I missed Elite Beat Agents which is slightly better to me.

Advance Wars Days of Ruin is better than Dual Strike if you haven't played it yet

Just so you know, the ported versions of 999 are much better. They reduce the repetition of the gameplay a lot.

I haven't played any Advance Wars, I thought Dual Strike was supposed to be the best one and a bunch of people here are vouching for it but I may well end up getting both at some point.

EBA, Advance Wars of some description and FFIV seem like the best reasonable options then while I look for a relatively cheap decent version of Ghost Trick and 999. This has been helpful!

999's in the Nonary Games collection, which I think is on PC/PS4/Switch. Regularly goes on sale for $10-$20. Ghost Trick's on iOS. Not sure how good the GT port is.

Ghost Trick and 999 siphoned all the votes that Apollo Justice would have gotten otherwise. It's probably the weakest game in the series, but it's still worth your time.

It appears Nonary Games is only PC/PS4/Vita, which sucks as I only have a Switch/Xbox for current gen. I might wait to see if they port it. Thanks for the info though, I didn't know there was a collection.

It's not that I won't ever play AJ, it's just a lower priority for me now. Golden Sun and maybe Metroid are the only games I've been warned off of entirely here.

The PC version has very low minimum requirements though, as you might expect from a visual novel series, so unless you're working off a toaster you can probably run it.

I'll probably get Dual Strike first then Days of Ruin assuming I like that and take it from there. Man it's weird how the series just died right there though.

Dual Strike is like the third game in the story (not that story really matters anyway) while Days of Ruin is standalone with a new setting/cast.

Okay I'll concede it doesn't really suck cause it's still AW in the gameplay, which is good. It was just such a weird departure that I just didn't like at all. Not sure if tc is aware that it was a reboot of the series.

Days of Ruin is just disappointing because it has little replay value when Dual Strike had a ton of it.

The "continued" story in DS is basically negligible.

The characters are all returning from prior games and so you won't get a nostalgia rush, but it's not like you need to play the earlier games to understand plot or care about the characters. They have enough charm on their own.

Days of Ruin is fine too.

Get all the castlevania games

Lifelong Metroid fan here. I can confirm that Hunters is trash. It makes Other M look like Prime 1.

Damn, I need to give Ghost Trick another try. I got about three hours into it and thought it was fun, but not gripping.

Ghost Trick does take a little bit of time to get going and it doesn't really stick the landing either. It's got a pretty good middle though.

(I've leaned back to Dual Strike again over Days of Ruin)

That's a real shame, I saw it reviewed well and I'm itching to play a good Metroid again.

Hunters isn't THAT bad. It was pretty impressive for its time. I imagine it probably hasn't aged well though.
