If the [project] is 2 months over due, then as the person tasked with rallying the troop, I have failed miserably and need to be stripped of that responsibility, I have done a shit job, no need to emphasise the point. I will go away and review my position here at [company], perhaps early retirement might be an option as at 62 the chances of re-employment are almost nil.

Christ I felt sad just reading that. The worst part is he's absolutely right. It's dramatic but he did fucking suck at co ordinating what should have been a very easy project.

We never try to blame an individual. How big is your engineering team? At ours, someone would have noticed and stepped in to help if we were seeing signs of a project being over due.

There are many places along the chain where things can go wrong in dev.

Yes that's the thing, there's plenty of shared responsibility so he's being a bit dramatic, although his one job was to coordinate things and he just...didn't do that. Worse, he didn't say that he was having issues or whatever. He just kept silent on it and said he was busy, but no one can figure out what he was busy with.

To be honest he's one of those guys that doesn't quite understand appropriate comments. Like he should have gone to his line manager with this, not posted it for the entire company to see. And if it was the first time I'd say he's just having a hard time but he has a frequent history of TMI.

Typical old guy stuff. Like when you say "hope you had a good weekend" and he delves into a 10 minute story about how his wife's auntie has been battling cancer or how he had irritable bowel syndrome and spent all day yesterday with the runs or whatever.

He extends this oversharing to clients as well.

I may sound callous but honestly there's only so many "my neighbour's arthritis" stories you can handle in a week.

He's too old and "senior" to fuck up a basic coordination task tbh. Literally all he had to do was keep tabs on outstanding development bugs and who was working on what, and follow up to make sure everyone was on them. But he didn't, and so now the entire company is 2 months behind on regular dev scheduled work.

Usually another guy handles this but is on leave. I told the GM I wasn't touching it.

Update. He decided it was again appropriate to raise his concerns in the entire company team meeting this morning , but not in a productive way. Just announced that he had "done a shit job" and that wasn't in charge of it anymore.

Him: It's been taken out of my hands, I've been beaten over the head with how useless I am
Line manager: Um...that's news to me?

Wow.

I asked someone because my first thought was that the guy is in trouble, but apparently he's done this over the years any time he's been called out on not doing his job properly. Like just ups and has a tantrum and chucks the toys out and mopes for a day or two and gets over it.
