....They don't ever look like that.

Ive read reports that a boat carrying fireworks exploded which led to the building exploding, as it was storing actual explosives

What a bigoted statement.
Not really. A basic understanding of physics and how explosions work explains this. Yet chuds all over the country are already yammering on about how it was nuke because they think nukes are the only things can generate mushroom clouds or shockwaves that loud.

That makes more sense.
The main...or later explosion almost certainly was at some kind of industrial chemical storage point.

I'm thinking more along the lines of this....but with the question of how this time.

I posted this only a page back but apparently it needs to be posted again:
https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/08/huge-explosion-rocks-lebanon-capital-beirut-live-updates-200804163620414.html
The Lebanese Interior Minister has said that ammonium nitrate was stored in the port, which is what caused the explosion, according to local reports.

He said Lebanese customs should be asked about why it was there.

Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr reporting from Beirut said the head of General Security, General Abbas Ibrahim, visited the site of the explosion and said it appears the explosion was caused by highly explosive material that was stored in a warehouse.

According to Ibrahim, the explosive material was confiscated years ago.

Fireworks wouldn't cause that. It would cause multiple explosions that would be a lot weaker and more scattered (to the point it would almost be a misnomer to even call them explosions) instead of just one big boom with a shockwave.

I mean, maybe a cache of fireworks got caught in the explosion but they definitely weren't what made the big boom.

it must look like an atomic bomb hit that zone. It looked like something out of a movie.
Look up the Galveston explosion. A freighter loaded with ammonium nitrate fertilizer caught fire. The end result was at least two frieghters of the same stuff the Oklahoma City Bomber used going off with such force they found a barge miles inland of the harbor in a parking lot. A whole warehouse of actual explosives probably looks less like a bomb going off and more like a land clearing project.

Officials are blaming highly explosive materials stored in a warehouse for six years.

President Michel Aoun tweeted it was "unacceptable" that 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate was stored unsafely.

An investigation is under way to find the exact trigger for the explosion.

Lebanon's Supreme Defence Council said those responsible would face the "maximum punishment" possible.

Why would you store 2,750 ton's of Amonium Nitrate near the port?

I'm sure there's some legacy business reason, but after this, storage of dangerous substances like this should be moved to the middle of no-where.

Storing that much Amonium Nitrate near the city was a bad idea.

I'm gonna be honest, that's not even a low ball estimate. We're probably looking at numbers in the hundreds. Not counting people so close to the blasts they were essentially vaporized, those will be your "missing" statistic...

Ammonium nitrate is this really annoying combination of useful and dangerous as fuck. It's heavily used in fertilizer, so unless we can invent a better and safer compound, this shit is going to keep happening.

I find it curious that the US didn't really bother to worry about ammonium nitrate, even after some dickhole blew up a building, until tweakers figured out how to make meth out of it. Now it's a national security risk.
