Over a decade ago, it may have been Golden Sun, but that series crashed and burned. Xenoblade seems to be doing much better for itself, even if the later entries didn't quite capture the magic of the original game in their own ways.

I for one am all for Xenoblade being grown as a brand.

It's fine. I think they need to abandon the current world/universe, keeping only the core concepts of scope and combat, though.

Xenoblade X was a really good first start towards that aim.

I'm in the minority here, but I thought Xenoblade 2 was totally fine. Not amazing, but fine.

I don't like Xenoblade, I think Golden Sun was way better, until the third game which was just mediocre. Sadly I think Camelot has lost the staff that made the first two GS games so magical and it doesn't seem interested in trying to rekindle it.

I lost interest in Xenoblade after about a dozen hours. It does have some nice voice acting though, I'll give it that.

Xenoblade 2 just looks like garbage to me from the writing to the voice acting to the character design. I played some of it with my friend and the gameplay didn't attract me either.

I love Golden Sun's snappy battle UI and its implementation of magic as both an in-battle mechanism and an overworld mechanic to be used in fun Zelda-like puzzles. I've never seen another RPG use magic so extensively and creatively like that both in and out of the battlefield, and with such versatility.

Also, no turn based RPG has ever had battles as snappy as Golden Sun. You can breeze through them so quickly if you want by holding the b button, or you can sit back and enjoy all the animations. None of the slog that modern Pokemon games have.

I think they should change the name because it's a bad series and is dragging down the far superior Xenogears with it

You're right, but I guess we ignore it in these dicussions because it's too obvious. And also I think people kind of separate the monster-collecting RPGs from the rest of them.

no one counts pokemon in these discussions because its a monolithic entity on its own, and prints money no matter what fuckery they do

Nintendo owns the trademark, but Pokemon is considered to be separate from the umbrella of Nintendo IPs.

I guess it's more accurate to say "more traditional JRPG series".

But as mentioned, the ownership of Pokemon is kind of weird. Nintendo doesn't have full control of it.

Xenoblade is a first party Nintendo series. They completely own Monolithsoft, the developers.

Remember when Americans had to fight tooth-and-nail for Xenoblade Chronicles to see the light of day in the US? And once it was finally released, it ended up being a GameStop exclusive with a paltry print run?

This series had one hell of a glow up.

yeah, despite their flaws I still love the GBA Golden Sun games
it is rather unusual that few other JRPGs use magic for anything other than combat/healing

Its still a different type of battles at its core and FE tends to have a bigger cast.

JRPGs are more party based and have turn based mechanics generally.

Thats where Xenoblade does separate itself well in that it does real time combat fairly well.
