The dogs hind leg looks injured by the way it's walking. The lion may actually be pitying the dog and not wanting to kill it (doesn't look much like a meal for the lion anyways)

So the zebras can see them, and the lions know they have virtually no chance of catching the zebras. Now, if the lions had charged, the zebras would've scattered. --- SaltyWet ... Plot twist: the dog was that Lion's best friend. The lion just got done clapping that lioness's cheeks and was about to make her part of his harem but the lioness isn't someone to be trusted and is already part of 2 other lion's harems and is trying to tear them all down.
