I've been doing a bit of reading on the perception of Alexander the Great over at academia.edu, thank god for free papers, and it's been pretty interesting on how this young Macedonian king has been perceived past his death. I found it pretty interesting how later Egyptian and Persian literature incorporated the young king as part of their national identity. For example the Persian poet Ferdowsi of the 10th century AD made Alexander be the half-brother of Darius and instead painted the conquest of the Achaemenid Empire as a dynastic struggle as Alexander sought to rightfully claim the Persian throne.

that sounds like interesting stuff. i might look that up sometime soon. in the fantasy novel series i'm writing, i'm basing one of the antagonists partly on Alexander the Great, but i still have to do more research on him in general before i can fully flesh out the character's parallels with him.
