Do you think a belief in god is necessary to be a person with morals?

https://www.pewresearch.org/global/2020/07/20/the-global-god-divide/

More education connected with belief that God is not necessary to have good values.

In most European and North American countries surveyed, individuals with more education are less likely to say that belief in God is necessary to be moral. This pattern closely tracks the connection between income levels and the way people answer this question, because there is a significant correlation between educational attainment and earnings.

In addition, there are differences on this question among respondents at different education levels in several other nations included in the 2019 survey. In 24 out of the 34 countries surveyed, respondents with higher levels of education are significantly less likely to say belief in God is necessary to be moral.

Religion is declining rapidly in America.

https://www.pewforum.org/2019/10/17/in-u-s-decline-of-christianity-continues-at-rapid-pace/

The data shows a wide gap between older Americans (Baby Boomers and members of the Silent Generation) and Millennials in their levels of religious affiliation and attendance. More than eight-in-ten members of the Silent Generation (those born between 1928 and 1945) describe themselves as Christians (84%), as do three-quarters of Baby Boomers (76%). In stark contrast, only half of Millennials (49%) describe themselves as Christians; four-in-ten are religious nones, and one-in-ten Millennials identify with non-Christian faiths.

Only about one-in-three Millennials say they attend religious services at least once or twice a month. Roughly two-thirds of Millennials (64%) attend worship services a few times a year or less often, including about four-in-ten who say they seldom or never go. Indeed, there are as many Millennials who say they never attend religious services (22%) as there are who say they go at least once a week (22%).

I watch a lot of anti-science debunking things on youtube and through that experience, I've learned that a fuckton of ""famous"" religious nutters actually think that they, not just people in general, but themselves specifically, would just go out and rape and murder left and right if they didn't fear God's judgement.

It's kind of gross.

It's easy to answer questions you made up so you can to smart when you answer it.

You'd be hard pressed to find someone who would actually ask that. You gotta seek out the very bottom of the people you want to write off.

Why isn't that poster answering real questions that actually go deeper? Instead of making up softball questions to easily hit out the park. That seems like a Trump tactic tbh.

basically this, although when the subject comes up i am always partial to posting the quote from True Detective season 1 which demonstrates the same point:

"If the only thing keeping a person decent is the expectation of divine reward, then brother, that person is a piece of shit."

Which is a very small percentage. You can compare that small percentage to atheists rapist and murders to make it an actual fair balanced comparison.

Basically religious people are like any other group, you're gonna see them as whatever examples reenforce you're preconceived notions of them.

Religious people saying you need to believe in God to have morals, atheists respond by saying religious people are really immoral because they need to be told how to be good.

It's all stupid.

Who invented morals? There you go.

Atheists will still say they were invented by humans, but that question is a way better starting point than arguing whether atheists or religious people actually have morals.

You don't have to believe in God for there to be morals, but God has to exist for there to be any sort of objective morality.

Nobody has that answer. If you want to claim God did, you're free to do so. But nothing suggests evolution needs an orchestrator in the first place.

Given that I know people who don't believe and are virtually saints (in public anyway) and people who do believe and are trash ass people, no it's not necessary. But I can see how it might help some people to believe. I just wouldn't expect a trash non-religious person to suddenly gain morals just from joining a church.

It might be performative. Obviously 99.999...% of Christians wouldn't go out and kill for fun the second they lost their belief in God. But I could very well believe that a lot of these people (the ones making this claim, not all Christians) would think that they would.

If you can't define it, can't interact with it, and can't otherwise demonstrate that it exists, then it probably doesn't.

false. there is absolutely nothing which necessitates the existance of any deity. also, which god are you talking about? which god is the sole arbiter of objective morality? the god that tells their believers to put homosexuals to death? or the god that tells their believers to wage war on the nonbelievers? or the god that cannibalized all of his children? or what?

The God that created everything, including morality
