Are you surprised?

https://www.nationalgeographic.com/books/features/5-blue-zones-where-the-worlds-healthiest-people-live/

For more than a decade, author Dan Buettner has been working to identify hot spots of longevity around the world. With the help of the National Geographic Society, Buettner set out to locate places that not only had high concentrations of individuals over 100 years old, but also clusters of people who had grown old without health problems like heart disease, obesity, cancer, or diabetes.

I recently read a well written article explaining how the longest living, healthiest people in the so called, Blue Zones of the world dont go to the gym.

However, while reading it I couldnt help but think what about their diet? Surely, that must be one of, if not the BIGGEST influence on a persons long-term health. So, I thought, why not write about it.

The Blue Zones include the following places:

Ikaria, Greece.
Okinawa, Japan.
Ogliastra Region, Sardinia.
Loma Linda, California.
Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica

What do Blue Zone people eat?
In short, the majority of their diet is plant based. This is based around fruits, vegetables, whole-grains, beans/legumes and nuts/seeds. They eat very little meat, fish and dairy.

Blue Zone diet Vs. Western diet
The Western diet, in contrast to the Blue Zone diet, is high in meat, fish and dairy but low in plants based foods. Westerners also have a lower life expectancy and suffer with high amounts of heart disease, diabetes, cancers etc.

To be fair, Western culture is built on gorging yourself. Our diet would look much better if we exercised more self control.

"Western diet" must be a bit of a misnomer if only one city in Japan falls into the "Blue Zone" category.

It isn't considered part of the blue zone. Only the community of Loma Linda is. You did read the article, right?
