I mean, a lot of people who claim they've gotten the virus only had what was like having the flu.

Wouldn't anything Sars related be far worse automatically to anyone who got it?

Or is testing really not that accurate yet?

There are people who only experience milder symptoms, or are asymptomatic.

And there are people that aren't so lucky.

I think the number dead as well as the number hospitalized would be a good indication that this is a SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome).

somehow i think if they just stuck with the name SARS(or SARS 2), it would be taken much more seriously since the xenophobia-slash-racism about SARS 1 was pretty widespread already back then.

Funny thing about Sars was that it wasn't even that bad.
From the CDC website:

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a total of 8,098 people worldwide became sick with SARS during the 2003 outbreak. Of these, 774 died. In the United States, only eight people had laboratory evidence of SARS-CoV infection. All of these people had traveled to other parts of the world where SARS was spreading. SARS did not spread more widely in the community in the United States.

I don't think that would have helped. I don't think people knkw what a "novel" virus is and would be convinced it was the same virus we delt sith before.
