I moved into a log cabin/rehabilitated pig barn about three years ago on my parents' property with my spouse. The original structure was a dilapidated former pig barn that my dad bought the bones of and reconfigured on our property when I was a little kid. He worked on it enough to assemble it and use it as a storage shed when I was little, but it stayed without electricity or completion for 20+ years until I moved back.

It didn't have heat, insulation or chinking when we moved in, but I put in the insulation and stucco lathe with my dad, then we did all the parging ourselves. Wire-brushed, sanded, washed and sealed all of the logs (American chestnut), too. I had to hire someone else to put in heating even that unit only gets the barn up to the 50s in wintertime but I'm pretty proud about how it's all turned out.

Dad and I accomplished the stairwell and upstairs in Summer/Fall 2018, but stopped for Winter, then delayed by a broken leg and other issues for the whole year. But this month, we finally both had the time, drive and dedication to do it.

The bottom floor is still used for storage and tools, so all of that stuff is still there for now without a clear destination unfortunately. The upstairs is where we live/sleep; we share bathroom/kitchen in the main house with my parents. Hopefully, we'll be able to buy the neighbor's house soon, or at the very least take over the bottom floor when we've used up more of the supplies on future planned projects.

That'll always be the dream. Having them knock before entering the downstairs to access tools or the spare fridge has been an issue.

Thank you so much! I'm really proud of it, but also I'm totally in awe of my dad. He designed and built those dormer windows in the roofline, as well as making the small, square windows and installing all of the paneling from various adventures and past homes he salvaged parts of. He's like if Mr. Rogers and Abe Lincoln had a baby with Huck Finn or Robinson Crusoe. He's not a carpenter; he worked in the legal side of animal control --- he's just a dedicated, awesome hobbyist and paragon of classical manliness.

I...guess. I did start getting into stained glass recently. My dad made a spooky face out of extra cement that he puts in the trees around Halloween, so he may appreciate the sentiment.

Ugh, right? It's a whole thing.

There's already a secondary shed on the east side of the barn filled with stuff. A chicken coop and rabbit hutch are the next projects and I'm really hoping to step on it to clear out the downstairs.

Though I think plumbing will always be outside the realm of possibility with this barn, unfortunately.

Heh. No prob, we've been accused of witchcraft by the locals before.

When I was a tween, we went down to check out an abandoned farm the county had finally acted on the lien upon and returned to the sale market. Their cool fieldstone barn had been demolished, as had the farmhouse, but there were still bits of trash around: a doll head, a mug, a bent spoon, etc.

Being a tween, I put the doll head on a stick and rattled it around, making stupid voices and stuff. Dad loved it, of course. Then he found a nearly-complete snake skin on our way off the property going back home. He stuck the doll stick on the ground and wrapped the snakeskin around it, we both guffawed, then left.

Cue a month later when the wife of a prospective developer is at a local gathering and she says that she had no idea there were covens and Satanists in the area. Then proceeds to tell my dad about how she found the most disturbing baby doll and snake skin totem at the entrance of the new property. >:)
