Would you die in relative peace or take the treatment?

You're walking along one day when suddenly your guts feel like they are exploding.

You crumple to the floor like a box of pizza being knocked off a table by a hungry dog. You start throwing up and coughing up blood. Blood also spurts out of your nose and you piss yourself. You're in tremendous pain and pass out.

You wake up in hospital as confused doctors run a battery of tests on you. After some time has passed a doctor approaches you looking stern and sorrowful.

"I'm afraid I've got some bad news. It's not Corona virus, you have De-Tylmarande disease. An extremely rare condition. In layman's terms your body is rejecting your organs.

Its a disease we know very little about. Infact up until now the only reported cases were from petite Canadian women in their 30s. You're somewhat of an anomaly. The good news is that it is not contagious. The problem is that it is terminal... There is no ... real treatment. No drugs will help. Even complete organ transplants wouldn't work, your body would reject them anyway. Besides once it reaches your brain they wouldn't make a difference regardless.

Like Pip I need you to manage your expectations. We'll make you as comfortable as we can but you only have 8-12 days. 14 at the most. You'll need to get your affairs in order. There's simply nothing anyone can do"
The doctor says.

"I'll be the judge of that!"
boasts a loud huge female doctor who has emerged dramatically.

"Seo-Yun Jiang!? This isn't your patient!"
your doctor says.

"There's nothing wrong with a consult. And your patient has a right to know that there IS a treatment. One with a 100% success rate. The one I came up with."

"That treatment is forbidden! It's too extreme."
Your doctor bites back.

"YOU forbid it. But it's not illegal. It's up to the patient to decide if they want to live. There is a herbal treatment that will keep your organs functioning and eventually fight off the disease. It takes about 400 days give or take a few weeks. Once that has passed you will make a full recovery and live the rest of your life. However during the treatment you will perpetually feel a rotation of intense unpleasant sensations such as immense constant pain, insomia, asphyxiation, nausea, loss of bowel control, loss of sex drive, paralysis, dizziness, coughing, coldness, itchiness and pain. I know I said pain twice but I thought it was such a big one that it was worth mentioning twice. The other issue is that we can't give you any drugs to help with those symptons. It would interfere with the herb treatment. No painkillers or beer or induced coma. It's a difficult road but it is an option if you don't want to die." Dr Jiang says.

"That's not medicine it's barbarism. You want to torture a patient for over a year? At least give the patient some time to think about it. They only just heard the news"

"Time? What like 8 days and then s/he's dead? Fair enough, just some expectations for your patient to manage. Aye, let's do that." Dr Jiang says before leaving the room.

Your doctor sighs "Dr Jiang is a genius when it comes to science and logic but she has no room in her heart for emotion or compassion. This treatment is wrong, it's a complete violation of the Hippocratic Oath. No true doctor would endorse it. Don't make the mistake to take it out of fear. You'll end up regretting it."

So 8-14 days of relative comfort followed by certain death

or 400 days of complete toture and misery but then afterwards your life continues as normal. As physically healthy as you were before.

Would you take the treatment?

So a little over a year of hell and I get to go back to my life? Yeah, I will take that over death.

So my experience with chemo was nothing like that but I was otherwise relatively healthy. I lost my hair and beard (beard was the worst part since I keep my hair short anyways), felt really weak, and got fat because I was sleeping all the time and unable to work for about 3 months. But I've known people who had way worse experiences, some because they had different chemo regimens than what I had (the regimen I had was used specifically for only High Grade B-cell lymphomas) or because their body tolerated the treatment way worse than I due to underlying health conditions. I spent a ton of time reading on the subject and from what I've been able to gather the regimens they use to treat advanced stages of Breast cancer are fucking horrible.

In regards to the actual topical question, I say go for the treatment. I spent 3 months with a combination of dry socket and TMJ from a botched wisdom teeth removal about 5 years ago, and then cancer and chemo last year so my tolerance for pain and discomfort is pretty high at this point.

No.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemotherapy_regimen
There are tons of different regimens based on the type of cancer and how advanced it is. I did 4 cycles of R-EPOCH and 4 intrathecal injections (chemo injected directly into the spinal fluid to treat or protect the brain) of methotrexate for the sporadic type of Burkitt's lymphoma (a form of HIgh Grade B-Cell lymphoma). My father had esophageal cancer and did a bunch of cycles of EOX before it eventually killed him. The body's response varies as to how otherwise healthy the person is, how far advanced their cancer is, and how toxic the regimen is to the body. To @monkmith 's point my understanding is that the older regimens were far harsher on the system than some of the newer regimens.
