Played the multiplayer once with my friends back in elementary school for about 20 minutes or so, but other than that, never touched it.

Nope. Using my old official N64 controller. Wanna get the rawest version of it like I was playing it when it came out.

I recommend a two controller scheme at least. Use 2.2 Galore and have the 2nd controller in your LEFT hand. (or pick 2.4 if you'd rather). I mean you don't HAVE to, but it's better, at least imo.

I never understood the controller hate. At least in the campaign, every single enemy encounter can either be cherry picked from a distance with R targeting and the super generous aim-assist, or just strafe spam and Leroy Jenkinsing into the room.

if youre manually aiming more than like, 5 times per level instead of just pointing the camera towards the enemy and spraying bullets youre playing it wrong. >_>

only moderately difficult parts are the final room of the bunker and protecting Natalya

I remember loving goldeneye them about a year later I was playing counter strike beta and Tfc with my buddies and goldeneye felt hopefully outdated back in 98/99

I heard the control scheme aged like cheap milk, but usually people exaggerate with older games. Made it to the dam and died. No checkpoints? Didn't see any health picks ups either. Maybe I should look up a manual.

Did try out the c buttons. Seem like that might help at least.

This is almost like one of those rail shooters with how you stand there and the screen locks for you to aim. Like Doom existed for like 5 years or something and Wolfenstein was in the 80s. Sure that wasn't with an N64 controller, but c'mon.

I'm sure I'll get used to it in no time though. I have a high tolerance for older games.

I've gravitated to the layout where you use the C buttons. Solitaire I think. Once you get used to it it just works better.

Obviously some things about the game are harder to deal with and are "dated", but the hate it gets now is just unwarranted.

I did a 100% playthrough earlier this year, for the first time in over a decade. The graphics are rough but the gameplay mostly holds up. The only thing that really annoyed me was trying to destroy automatic turrets from outside their range... even if you memorize their locations, you still have to squint to see the faintest hint of a blue pixel or two to shoot at.

There are no health pickups, but there is body armor. At the dam, I believe the body armor is very close to where you start the level in one of the towers.

I'm a little over half way through the game right now. Controls I've gotten used to. When I started I thought I HAD to stop and aim with the L and R buttons. Not doing that sure made it a lot easier lol.

Really not enjoying it though. Has its moments and when you are just getting through levels shooting bad guys it can be fun, but the objectives aren't clear enough a lot of the times. I must have spent over half an hour running around one level trying to find a security cam I missed to shoot. The escort stuff is bad. A waypoint or map would help a lot. I also hate the level design. Last one I played last night was the streets with the big massive open empty areas with just 3 guys up ahead constantly when you turn a corner and civilians running around in the way. Was like an awful maze.

I'm sure I'd have cut this game a lot more slack in 97, but this is one classic that has actually aged horribly. This and Metroid are the ones that I just think don't hold up at all.

I never played the Metroid series as a kid, and as an adult the couple of times I've tried to play the first game, I've quit after not very long just because I was bored with it.

Hardest levels for me were always Control and Aztec.

Favorites were The Facility and the snow surface levels. And the Frigate boat
