I love the Nolan series. But that was the most un-Batman thing in whole series. He would not take a 8 year break. That was too long.

It wasn't even a break. He straight up "retired" because his childhood friend he had a crush on passed away.

I guess somehow there was no more serious crime for those 8 years, everything was peachy keen.

The Dent Act was supposed to legally do what Batman did, which was deter crime and keep criminals off the street.

Thats why Batman retired.

This. Also, his body was pretty banged up and having made himself an actual villain in the eyes of everyone (what with taking responsibility for the MURDER of Dent) would have made it easy harder to do the job.

Nolan's vision of Batman is slightly more realistic than many other interpretations. Once Gordon was commissioner he also trusted the police to be working way better too. He had no reason to keep doing it.
