Basically his elementary school has a long-term grant that supplies free breakfast and lunch to every student, and since it's not getting used they decided to disperse the money. I didnt have to sign up or opt in, they just mailed it to me and it has something like $300 for the month

I've never used one of these things before

$300 is fucking awesome! It's used like any preloaded debit card but for food items, not sure what the requirements are though.

Probably depends on the state. In Maryland, they just sent out cards automatically to the parents of any child who would qualify for EBT, free school lunch, etc.
