If a game has quality and is marketed right, it will sell. Especially if its got Assassin's Creed in the name. Horizon Zero Dawn was one of Sony's best selling PS4 games

So I don't really think that's a bad statement, at least not compared to the actual misconduct behind the scenes. I know in my case I can think of 2 games where I played as a chick, kotor2 and life is strange. There may have been others but those are the only 2 i really liked. Oh wait Portal counts I guess...

One thing people sort of neglect is that female gamers don't necessarily want to play as women all the time. Just like male gamers sometimes want to play as a female character, it works the other way around too. I hate that it's considered such a black and white thing, "girls want to play as girls!" no, gamers just want compelling characters who are appropriate to the setting

The sexual breakdown of gamers really shouldn't matter at all to designing characters. "He has a penis. She doesn't have a penis" doesn't really make a character relate to me, but maybe I'm the weird one. Kratos and Lara Croft are both fantasy characters. I don't feel closer to Kratos just because he has a dick under there while he rips people in half.

How many games write about a certain biological sex in a way that makes the game difficult for other humans to enjoy?

I liked the dynamic between the two characters, and I think Alexios makes a better friendly goofy dude while Kassandra makes a better scary intimidating dude

I agree. So why do people keep bringing up this?

Even kids cartoons get this pushback. Nickelodeon didnt want Korra to be agirl because they felt a male protagonist would sell better.

But this logic is just... grandfathered in at this point. Wheres the proof of this?

Weebs loved Edelgard the most in Fire Emblem.

MMORPGs are filled of dudes playing girls.

GTAOnline and RDR2 online have dudes playing girls.

Dudes like Metroid and Tomb Raider.

People were excited for TLoU2.

I picked the female Wood Elf in EverQuest since the male Wood Elf looks like trash. I also got a lot of free items from men who thought I was actually a woman. Double win.

I admire a dev who is upfront about his admiration for sexy female characters.

This is kind of a hard one to debate on. I think as far as video games go, I don't think it really matters the gender of the character, I think people care more about the world they get to interact with and the gameplay.

But, given a choice and from stats that I've seen, gamers overwhelmingly choose male characters to play as, and for some reason people act like that's something people need to be upset about.

I think Odyssey could have performed successfully with just the female lead, mostly because it's a brand name and an open world game set in Greece, something that's fairly novel in the video game world.

this is why there was no black widow movie for so long

supergirl, electra, tank girl, cat woman
all box office failure superhero movies and each one failed for a different reason that had nothing to do with the protagonists breasts
but they still blamed the protagonists breasts and studios refused to make women led superhero movies for the longest time and then wonder woman showed that maybe if you didnt write a female led superhero movie to be complete shit from start to finish it would sell better

Yes that was one of the tells that they were forced into adding in the choice of playing as Alexios. There's also some subtle ones like Alexios having many of the same animations as Kassandra (particularly running).

And I think there's also some glitches that can be encountered when playing as Alexios such as his voice being replaced by Kassandra's and npcs suddenly referring to him as a female. There are countless reports of this occurring and almost none from the other direction (Kassandra's voice being replaced with Alexios').
