Current Events > It's pretty clear COVID has completely fucked up Nintendo's output right?

Now that Paper Mario is out they don't have a single upcoming game that has a release date or even window. They're all TBA.

We'd usually know what games they had the rest of the year last month. But there's still nothing. Probably because whatever they had planned has been delayed to next year. My guess is BOTW2.

I don't remember Nintendo ever being this quiet and I had a Wii U! Closest comparison I can remember was when they had droughts because they struggled with the transition to HD.

I suppose if you asked me which game company would not handle a major transition to working from home Nintendo would be the obvious pick due to how conservative and resistant to change they are,

I think they're gonna surprise us with BotW 2 and I think it was always slated for around March 2021.

Its definitely fucked up their ability to put together presentations and information.

I think actual development hasnt been slowed too much.

The way Paper Mario came out of nowhere, I think, exemplified this.

Then why they are having a hard time? There's no excuse for them to not show some other things. Sony showed everything they are going to show and are still producing videos of new content coming out.

What is Nintendo's excuse?

There's no way BotW2 was coming out this year. I doubt Covid has had any impact on any games being produced for release this year tbh.

It's weird because you'd think putting together presentations would be the easy part of all of this.

The first half of this year being Animal Crossing, Xenoblade and Paper Mario seems pretty normal. The second half having absolutely nothing (so far) is not. I think they'd usually have a major game around September and then another around November-December.

They don't have one. Six, seven months later, and they've failed to adapt.

They probably would rather no news, since they can't keep stuff on the shelf.

They'll not hype it, sell out anyway, only receive praise

In comparison last year from July onwards they had;
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3
Fire Emblem Three Houses
Astral Chain
Daemon x Machina
Link's Awakening
Ring Fit Adventure
Luigi's Mansion 3
Pokemon Sword and Shield

I think the only one that had a late release date was Ring Fit.

Pokemon S&S had a November release date, and MUA, Astral Chain, and Daemon are all 3rd party. 3rd party games are still being released this year. Bravely Default 2 for example.

Also doubt that PM was the last 1st party game for this year. Nintendo isn't going to skip a holiday season.

There's definitely something going on. We'd know some Fall titles by now usually, and the amount of first party games out this year is crazy low

I'm counting those games because they're published by Nintendo. But okay. There's Bravely Default 2. Which has a release date of just 2020. So that's one. What else is there?

Maybe, but Nintendo is pretty famous for their propensity and willingness to delay a product, so I wouldn't necessarily say that Covid has definitely pushed anything back from Q3 or Q4 2020 to next year.

Yeah its weird. Probably because Nintendo is a little set in their ways and even for a Japanese company they are prideful in keeping everything in-house and done their way. Along comes covid and suddenly their ways of doing things just cant cope. They probably resisted adapting at first. Then when that didnt work they tried finding ways to fix it themselves instead of outsourcing. And here we are months later.

These gaps arent as apparent with developing software as the devs simply just keep working quietly to themselves. But Directs, media relations, etc. anything that requires more collaboration and localizing, and so on...its painfully obvious.

We have at least NMH3 releasing this year as well and Brain Age will also most likely get a NA release. But again, i doubt Nintendo will have a holiday season without a big release.

Neither is Bravely Default 2. Just saying that there are still 3rd party exclusives being released this year. Nintendo publishing them seems rather inconsequential.

Says they are here. But you brought the game up regardless.

I'm talking about Nintendo's output. Not third party games on the Switch.

well the point is Nintendo has announced nothing they are publishing

this level of silence on upcoming releases is uncommon even for nintendo. They have literally nothing announced with even a release window

Even if they pull a Paper Mario and randomly announce a game with no Direct that still wouldn't be until October at the earliest. Honestly I only really see that happening for the Mario Collection now.

It's just bizarre. I would have thought right after Paper Mario they would have announced what their next thing is if they were attempting to drip feed news. Instead they specifically just did a third party only Direct which has never happened before! I find it crazy that the only stuff they have upcoming is stuff they've announced over a year ago with no release window at all.

If COVID wasn't a thing what would their E3 have even been if there wasn't an impact otherwise? If it's not COVID something else is happening back there.

I think it is COVID though and they're just trying to hide it. I think we'll see more of this from other companies next year.

I'm willing to bet it's actually slowed more than you would have thought. Just look at Smash Brothers. Their character releases have become delayed by months, and this is with infamous workaholic Sakurai at the helm, a man who at one point hooked himself up to an IV drip so he could continue working while sick.

I actually thought they'd want a heavy hitter like Zelda to try and stay in the spotlight for the next gen launch.

Zelda probably would have been delayed regardless though.

Also it's crazy to think Animal Crossing was supposed to be last year. Imagine if that was the case. 2020 would be dire.

Yeah I'm kinda concerned about Nintendo, hopefully they have a strong 2021 to make up for this but I guess they still have time to announce something for this year.
I get why people are talking left and right about the Mario Collection stuff but, to the best of my knowledge, none of it is confirmed, so I wouldn't be so sure it's coming.

we'll beg/plead/give our soul to have the mario collection in some form.
super mario maker 2 doesn't fill the void completely.

and we hate to hunt for older systems and games just to have it.

But they also said the same thing about the Metroid Prime Trilogy and still no sign of that lol

I think it's pretty obvious corona fucked up the way they do things and since Nintendo is run by old money they won't adapt to the new way at all. at best I expect another character announcement sometime in December and they'll probably start talking about the crown tundra DLC in October
