Honestly I think it's less that they don't give a shit and more being fucked over by the console generations. They can't really pump shit out like the PS2 era anymore.

Their strategy for the last two gens has been to put P-Studio on the console because Persona makes more money and put the SMT/EO team on the handhelds and spam ports with some new stuff. P-Studio took over an entire console gen to make Persona 5 and only Catherine otherwise. When the WiiU came out the SMT team took YEARS just to make TMS#FE (which I think had an even longer wait than SMT5 currently has) and then that system died. Now they have to make a Switch game and start the process over again. I'm just speculating but I think their unfamiliarity with the consoles and the turnover rate on the WiiU is why we aren't getting more and bigger games from them.

Meanwhile Persona makes so much money that they paid the director who got them so much cash to fuck off and make a third studio because he wants to do his own shit instead of MegaTen now...

i mean the thing is though, SMT doesn't like...need high techinical fidelity? i honestly don't think anyone would be particularily upset if we got an upscaled 3ds-like SMT5 that was true to the series roots and at least as good as SMT4 (which itself had a lot of problems but was still pretty rad)

SMTxFE is uhh...not something i would ever reference in a good light in this discussion. the main SMT time spending so much time on that game is precisely the kind of choice i have major problems with.

not that i'm saying that game was bad. i have no idea. but it's decidedly not SMT.

again though, i don't really blame atlus, persona is their golden goose. i get why they're doing it.

it's just sad because the elements of persona that they seemingly decided to hone in on and bring over to their other franchises are some of the worst elements of persona.

Yeah I wasn't making a statement of quality and I also havent played it. And I agree with the disappointment that it isn't a "real" SMT game. I can chalk the creative decisions up to a desire to appeal to the FE side as well as Persona fans, though I dont know if it worked. But I don't really blame them for it because despite everything the SMT team seem to have put a lot of effort into it because they wanted to make sure their MegaTen-adjascent crossover was a high quality console game. To me it comes across as they knew they weren't going to have that chance to collab or have such a high profile on a non-Persona game again and gave MORE of a shit.

It's just that Persona 5 and TMS both show how long it takes them to make ONE game and so far SMT5 is following that same pattern

I believe the argument there is we wouldn't have had to wait so long if they'd made a less graphically ambitious game. If they were just continuing to make 3DS/PS2 level games, V would've probably been out a year or two ago.

I'm saying if they probably had to redevelop for a new console, that seems like the limiting factor anyways and I dont know how much doing another SMT4 style would have sped it up. Even with sprites that game still had 3d environments that now have to be designed for HD.

yeah no i definitely agree that it seems they're still figuring out how to make modern console games and that slows them down, which isn't a bad thing on its own.

that's why like, if they came out and were like "we've been spending the last 5 years making future-proofed assets for our games and so it might not look like much now but the rest of our games will be much easier to produce" it'd make sense? there is a ton of demon crossover so theoretically they could use these models in tons of games in the future. but it doesn't necessarily look like that was the case.

edit: also in the hypothetical where they gave us an upscaled 3ds quality game, the assumption tehre was that, yes, it didn't take this long to come out. and then we wouldn't be going from an HD nocturne to a 3ds quality game. i was also asserting that said game would have been more in line with the mainline game design as it had been established and not, theoretically, filled with co-opted persona stuff that i am (with only conjecture, admittedly) assuming to be in the game we are actually getting

or to rephrase it maybe: i'd be happier with a crappy looking game true to what i felt made SMT unique and distinct from other games of its ilk and other atlus properties than an acceptable looking game that continues implementing design choices that i think make the series less unique and compelling. i think a good portion of the fanbase would be too.

but this is the same shit that happens with any franchise that becomes popular so...i don't expect anything different. it just is what it is. this is what happens to stuff.

but again i want to make it clear that i realize i'm making a lot of assumptions based on conjecture. there's nothing in the trailer to suggest any significant amount of persona-fication. it's just the lack of anything of real substance coupled with the decisions they've been making over the past 5+ years.
