I stopped watching as both of them were assholes.

Edit-In a weird way Light was more sympathetic. When he gave the death note up his personality reverted to a likable guy. L didnt care about the consequences of his actions as long as he solved the case. And the way he just goes from being like 5% certain Light was Kira to 100 was contrived as fuck.

L. Light was an idiot that could have done a million things to alter his outcome.

Light but then he's written to turn into an absolute piece of shit but near and mellow were both so unlikeable. I would have preferred that L and Light just kill each other

L. Light was given the benefit of a lot of doubts when it came to the death note. He never seemed to get someone wrongfully convicted, and this was before the time and out of location of our current cultural zeitgeist about race and crime. It was almost the end before it was mentioned he didn't go after ex-cons that went striaght. No gang wars or conflicts were started by a power vacuum he may create. Oh, and then there was that pesky habbit of him killing anyone that was a threat to him and his cause, even if otherwise innocent.

L was no saint, less concerned with lives than his ego about solving the case, but that's why they're a perfect inverse match: Light does bad things for good intentions because he believes he's the only one that can. L does the right thing for selfish reasons to prove to himself just how smart he is.

Light was clearly in the wrong, but I didn't really root for either, I just enjoyed the intrigue.

L, if I had to pick one. I just wanted Light to be stopped, didn't matter who did it. I don't agree with some of the methods L used.

Uhh the only reason Light had anyone on his trail was because he selfishly wanted people to know a specific person was doing it and "needed" worshipers. He could have quietly continued doing bad things for good intentions, but he didn't. He pushed it too far right out the gate.

I took that as more he needed a "kira" to exist and inspire fear as a definitive entity, not because he personally wanted worship. At lest he knew he'd never get any direct appreciation for his efforts.
