I don't think there's much tc can do. I used to work with people on welfare and this sort of thing happened all the time. The government is very cowboy when it comes to getting their money back.

I do a lot of tax accounting work and there are clients that come to me for help because they got too much refund and the IRS wants that money back. Most of the time it's negligence because they try to file the tax on their own and have no idea what they're doing, but I do have clients that were fully aware they got too much and just spent it all. Those are the clients I tend to push away because they're in a messy situation overall and no matter what I do they won't like the outcome and I get blamed for it (happened to me 5 times in order for me to go with a big nope).

But yeah I never worked in welfare, but that would be my to go deal if I'm not at fault.

Did it seem like it was too much at the time? My wife filed an unemployment claim for the week she was out of work and apparently was approved. If she ever gets a check for more than that week I told her to call call and return it.

That's messed up, but thems the breaks TC. You knew if you were receiving extra that they would most likely come for it eventually. I wouldn't be surprised if once the pandemic aid is over that they'll look into things and come for a lot of people at once.
