That no normal computer could handle it very well? Was the dev team using some kind of high end non-public computers at the time when making the game combined with their engine of choice?

it was a custom-made game engine that had really realistic physics. Theres a pretty cool YouTube video on it that you can find pretty easily.

It was a gorgeous game but very poorly optimized. To this day the last level runs like garbage and sometimes just doesnt work.

There are some insane graphics mods for it that make it look near photorealistic.
