If demons can possess whoever they want, willy-nilly, why don't they just possess Sam and Dean?

they dont get those until season 3, but they do get possessed at a point which causes them to get the tats

Gotcha. Well, demons could possess Sam and Dean in S1, they just don't for whatever reason. At this time the Winchesters are not on the demons radar in as large of a way as they are later in the series. They are to a degree, but not so much where they are really looked at as a threat. Also keep in mind that at the time of S1, demon possessions in general are at a much smaller scale than what they become later on in the show. At the end of S1, Bobby mentions how few demon possessions he usually hears of in a year, and that this year it was increasing in a major way. We would see it grow exponentially throughout the series.

Then there's the fact that John does get possessed by a demon later in the Season, Sam gets possessed in S2 which leads to them carrying anti-possession charms given to them by Bobby, and then in S3 they get the anti-demon tattoos as another poster suggested.

To answer your original question in short, the obligatory because it wasn't written that way.

I believe it's mentioned early on that demonic possession is pretty rare. I think this was the first one Sam and Dean ever personally encountered. It makes sense because Hell is said to be pretty difficult to escape. It's also not a place you want to go back to, so most demons would probably keep a low profile. Possessing a member of a hunter family, one of the few types of people that know how to get rid of you, is kind of the opposite of a low profile.

Obviously, this changes later on and possession becomes almost ridiculously commonplace, but it jives with the fact that the bad guys want more soldiers on the ground.

For more specific spoilers, Yellow-Eyes probably forbade anyone from messing with them too much because he has plans involving Sam.

That's where I'm at now. Their dad just go possessed, then they got hit by a truck. Ghost Dean is wandering around right now trying to talk to Sam.

I was wondering because when they rescued their dad, demons were just possessing people all over the place, and I was just wondering why they don't possess Dean or Sam. Then they could just snatch the Colt.
