If I were to play the games should I play the actual first game or should I get Black Mesa (which to my understanding is a remake of the first game)?

If Steam has the Half Life collection(1, 2, expansions) bundle for less than $10, get that. HL2 alone is still pretty phenomenal despite its age.

You can go for Black Mesa but warts and all original Is still worth a play

I played through HL1 and Opposing Force recently.

They might not have aged well but they're pretty good games. The biggest appeal to me for Half-Life 1 was all the mods people made. Like They Hunger and Heart of Evil for singleplayer stories.
Natural Selection, Brainbread and Hostile Intent were awesome for multiplayer but I'm certain their communities are dead now.
