I like being given the freedom to approach things my own way. Open world games are usually good for that, but more level-based structures can offer that freedom within levels as well.

Linear narrative probably, but when open world narrative is done right, like Witcher 3, then thats good too

I like GTA and Red Dead but I think they seriously need to rework their narrative design. Traveling to a mission only to spend the first five minutes of said mission traveling somewhere else is such a poor and outdated design.

Also, open world games that hide their story content behind open world tedium are the worst.

These days it's a plus if I can finish a game in a couple of evenings without too much hassle. There was a time where I'd be disappointed in a game that had less than 50 hours of genuine content.

mostly Soulsborne games, whatever they're classified under.

and recently, I've been getting into turn-based CRPGs, like Divinity: Original Sin 2 and Pillars of Eternity II.

no storyline or narrative, just replayable gameplay (ex: diablo 3 seaons, super smash bros)

Will get my highest hour count

linear, narrative-based (ex: TLOU, God of War)
Will get my best reviews

Open world can die in a fire. No game has been made better by including it.

Ass Creed Bro and Ground Zeroes are legit the only two I can think of where open world amounted to much more than hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours of the sprint animation on loop.

Replayability. I mostly like shmups, 2D action side scrollers, and roguelikes. Cutscenes can fuck off. It blows my mind how so many game trailers are made up mostly of shit where the player isn't even doing anything. Though I didn't mind the interludes between fights in Furi.

The story is usually never the problem in JRPGs, it's the storytelling and the dialogue that really lets it down.

Out of those on your list, probably #1 (voted this) followed by #6.

My favorites either aren't on the list or are a subset of one of those on it. They are:

  • A series of interconnected rooms/areas that open up as the story progresses (or through finding keys, solving puzzles, etc.) and can be returned to at (mostly) any time, with no separate "levels" (Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, most Zeldas, System Shock 2)
  • A Metroidvania: a series of interconnected rooms/areas that predominantly open up as you gain more abilities, and can be returned to at (mostly) any time, often with little story
  • A linear, level-based game where each level is like a mini sandbox or a hub (Deus Ex, Hitman)
  • A relatively linear game with a world map connected to towns/dungeons/etc. that predominantly opens up as the story progresses (Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Skies of Arcadia)
If I had to pick one of those, probably the Metroidvania.

Thats like saying gameplay is never the problem with X, its the game breaking glitches and terrible frame rate that really lets it down

The real problem tends to be the pacing.

Uh oh the world is about to explode and only we can save it. But we have time to go sightseeing, bet on horse races and solve our friend's daddy issues, right?

Id say souls games are linear with little story, they arent truly open world imo, most players are still on the same path

Replayable gameplay, with a story, and multiple unlockables. Beat game once, get other characters to use, ect.

I voted for the Skyrim option because none of them are exactly what I prefer, which would be RPGs that have some amount of linear storyline as well as some freedom to explore, change paths, & whatnot. In other words, something like Dragon Age: Origins.

You shouldn't be. They've been absurdly popular for over a decade now.

I actually appreciate linearity. I don't much care for being dumped in a sandbox and wondering "now what?".
