Welcome to the King of Fighters 2020 (NOT MERCS) Simulated Character Battle Tournament!

The game is simple. The two* listed characters are placed in an (imaginary) location with a variety of (imaginary) environments, kind of like a picture in a child's schoolbook that describes different types of geological features. Within a ten mile radius, there is an (imaginary) urban downtown, exurbs, plains, snow-clad mountains at the edge, dry plains, etc. Fighters start wherever is most appropriate for them, but feel increasingly compelled to seek out their opponent and fight. Strong-willed fighters can try to hold out in their chosen environment for longer... eventually, all will succumb and actively search for the other to battle.

To participate, just vote in bold for whichever character you believe will win. Giving reasoning is optional, but please be polite and read what others have said and carefully make your decision. I'll ping the nominators (they can opt out) to give arguments if they wish.

TODAY'S PARTICIPANTS:
Squall Leonhart (Final Fantasy VII)

Despite his skill with his iconic gunblade, Squall's most important tool is his weaponized teenage angst that can demoralize nearly any opponent

vs

Skjorn (azuarc's own writings)

<I can't make a description>

azuarc is running a guessing game now so it'll be at least a bit before he can talk about his character. Please don't make too strong an argument until we know anything at all about Skjorn

Wait, wasn't this something I submitted to you like a whole year ago? Pretty sure I gave you a description then. But okay, here goes...in as much as I can write in like three minutes before getting back to my game...

Skjorn is a centuries-old valkyrie. She can summon a spear and armor at any time, and can use the spear to summon lightning, either directed out of the spear or from the sky. She is a master spear fighter, and when her pride gets the better of her, she will resort to fighting weaker opponents purely in melee, confident of her ability to dispatch them. Skjorn is uncommonly tall and strong for a woman, a la Brienne of Tarth, so she certainly has the physical talents to go with her skill.

Due to being a valkyrie, she does not tire, she does not age, and if killed, she will "rebirth," which is a fancy way of saying she can bring herself back to life with like a 3-day cooldown. For purposes of this discussion, that basically just means she has to be killed twice.

Skjorn is an arrogant bitch, constantly angry at everything, and not afraid to lash out. She is not the main character of my stories, but she's a lot of fun to write because she is always f'ing everything up, intent on doing things her own way. I wish I had time to write something a little more eloquent here, but you're just deciding who would win in a fight, so I think that should cover it. I dunno, I'll check back later.

I would watch this fight but I have no idea yet who'd win

also, personally, I think that if you die but have a three-day revive, you've lost the fight. you can come back in three days and start a new fight, if you want, but this one's over.

Squall

its gonna take way way more than lightning and fancy spearwork to best a final fantasy character and the diversity of spellcasting they bring to the table

I feel like Squall probably routinely fights tougher enemies in FF8 than Skjorn, going off her description. But he's always with a party. What is his experience fighting enemies solo?

Skjorn is "constantly angry at everything." Is she the type to charge in, spear blazing? Would she come up with a plan first? Squall is likely very good at battle tactics given he graduated from a mercenary school that tests "judgment" in combat as one of its attributes. Skjorn might have centuries of battle experience, but if she's just charging in all the time, Squall can probably outwit her.

Would she use her resurrection to make smarter decisions or would it just piss her off more?

If Squall has a fully-junctioned GF or two, Skjorn's in trouble because his stats and abilities would be ridiculous. It wouldn't even be close to a fair fight. So, does he?

Skjorn has peak human physical skills, but not superhuman. If he has lightning resistance junctioned, she's going to have to run up to him, which gives him time to burn a few spells or summon Bahamut or something. I still wouldn't count Skjorn out at that point if we aren't assuming this battle is taking place in the FF8 combat engine, but I have a really hard time picturing how Squall would fight, alone, outside of a turn-based environment, though. Only thing we have to go off of is the opening sequence with him vs Seifer, and Skjorn's level of mastery with her weapon should easily surpass a couple of teenagers. Not to mention she's stronger and quicker than a base-level Squall, with them having about equal reach. So the entire discussion comes down to what tricks Squall has up his sleeve. Does he hit her with a zillion status effects? Drop the Brothers on her head? Turn her into a card?? Those are all things that a late-game Squall could do. But early-game Squall who doesn't even know how to use Quetzacoatl would get roasted.

She's usually incredibly, furiously angry when she comes back from rebirth considering she still remembers the pain of being stabbed to death or whatever. So no, unless her reviving catches Squall off-guard, it's really just round 2, fight. If she weakened him on the first pass, or learned not to position her face in front of his gunblade, sure, maybe that gives her a better chance on the second pass. But if he roasts her in part 1, he'll roast her in part 2.

And to answer rwlh's question, she's not really one for strategy. Tactics, sure. She might outperform Squall in that regard, given she has centuries of battlefield experience. But not strategy.

Yeah, this isn't really a contest in that case.

Squall

Base Squall is...well, maybe not peak human, but reasonably close - he's strong, skilled, rigorously trained and all that. Junctions massively improve all his parameters. Assuming we're going by endgame Squall, he just ridiculously out-stats a peak human.

I would assume this is endgame Squall, yes? That would be his most powerful form. So he'd have everything he'd reasonably be expected to have by the end of the game. That might mean lightning resistance (I'm not sure if it does), as well as other parameters that would put him above peak human. I could see him killing Skjorn once, and then her coming back to life berserked and him killing her again, particularly if she doesn't have any new tricks.

I found a feat from the "Death Battle Fanon wiki" that states Squall "Deflected energy arrows that Ultimecia surrounded him with after freezing time." It also describes his ultimate attack, which involves 16 slashes and a shockwave. How that translates to real-time fighting, I don't know, but I feel like it's enough to give him the edge over Skjorn.

Squall.
