Whoa I'm a big Pumpkins fan but I've never heard that. Their stuff pre 1st album is really 80's sounding. I've heard the bootleg of their 1st concert and it's pretty much The Cure. They didn't find their guitar sound yet.

Speaking of Pumpkins, they got some metal-sounding s***: Zero, An Ode to No One, XYU, Where Boys Fear to Tread, Bodies, The Aeroplane Flies High

I think modern Deathcore makes extreme subgenres much more accessible. And I say modern because the subgenre is not as obscenely heavy and nonsensical as it used to be. Lots of bands making music with great lyrics, exploration of themes, and actual musical composition.

These aren't things I'm recommending based on your likes, just stuff to check out and see what you like about it and what you don't, and then that can be fine tuned into finding what you will like in the more diverse extreme subgenres.

You should definitely check out Cryptic Writings by Megadeth. It was their more rock ish album and a lot of people who dont like thrash metal like this album. Its basically structured like rock songs, but its really heavy. Its also a good intro to Megadeth because they have some amazing stuff.

TC I feel like we have fairly similar interests and have taken similar paths in finding music.

I've recently gotten into Slayer and recommend you give them a shot. Theyre not quite as accessible as some of the other bands you listed, but once you get into it, its good shit.

Just stay off the metal board here. Unless the band has like 5 fans then theyre hated

Over on the metal board we've been doing a best album of the year thing for every year from 1980 on. The winners have primarily been popular mainstream (or as close to it as it gets) stuff, even when the extreme sub genres show up it's usually the biggest names. Especially in the 80s/90s

What have you liked this far?

can rec a bunch more stuff depending on what you like

rough overview on some subgenre, note many bands blend styles so its not an exact science

doom metal - emphasis on slow and heavy riffs, inspired by sabbath style (most of my last post

sludge Metal - an offshoot of doom with heavier sounding vocals and hardcore punk influence. If you know early mastodon or melvins that sort of thing

thrash metal - fast, upbeat drumming, often cleaner vocalsyou already know Metallica so in that vein

death Metal - derived from thrash but more intense, with deep guttural vocals and often more intricate/technical riffs

black metal - more atmospheric, vocals are generally shrieks as opposed to the deep growls of death, defined often by fast tremolo picking that isnt necessarily technical so much as used for dynamics

cant really help you on power metal and stuff in that vein because I find it corny as hell, but its generally the more traditional sound, meant to be more accessible and influenced by the melodic sensibilities of say Iron Maiden, etc

The black dahlia murder-nocturnal, the raven
Blessthefall- hollow bodies, you wear a crown but you're no king

Its blackened deathcore and youre not gonna find much that does it better than Lorna Shores Immortal album. Although theres a bunch of bands doing it. The most obvious one is Carnifex.

Shrine of Malice
Mental Cruelty
Angelmaker
Scumfuck
Hollow Prophet
Mire Lore
Sold Soul

Modern Deathcore reeks of this stuff, most of it stinks. Lorna Shore really perfected it and your not going to find anything as good with the bar set so high. r/Deathcore and Lorna Shore radio on spotify is where youre best of digging into.

Do you listen to Humanity's Last Breath they're so heavy slow and downtuned it's actually comical.

https://youtu.be/q2UpP10V-6U

Bound in Fear is a band I had come up on a Spotify mix and usually with Deathcore I just let the music play and don't think much but I had to go back and replay this one from the beginning because it really got my attention.

https://youtu.be/HeQ-OaWEQvA

Features Alex from Black Tongue which is always a good sign in Deathcore.

Stygian Complex had a little EP come out a few weeks ago and it was solid. Really had a bit of the old school Deathcore feel I often reminisce about.
