So I've dabbled here and there with some metal; but I've always been super confused on all the different sub-categories, and when I ask friends for recommendations I don't really have a basis for what exactly I like, so they just give me their own favorites and it's often super hit or miss.

Some metal and metal-ish bands I know I like for reference:

Rammstein
System of a Down
Metallica
Sonata Arctica
Korn
Pantera
Tool
Soundgarden
Alice In Chains

Other bands that I've heard bits of and liked, but don't know a ton about/only know a couple of their songs I like:
Slipknot
Disturbed
Ghost
Iron Maiden
Amon Amarth
Mudvayne

Help me CE, I don't know much, but I wanna know more.

I don't think I like the vocals of Three Inches of Blood.

The Haunted seems solid, I can kinda vibe with the couple of songs I just checked out.

The Bronx I'm not sure on, I could go either way, I need to give them more of a listen.

I'm more into punk over metal, but I have a few suggestions regardless if you want to broaden your horizons.

Intro to punk that isn't real heavy

NOFX - White Trash Two Heebs and a Bean
Bad Religion - All Ages or Stranger Than Fiction
Face to Face - Big Choice

More indy/hardcore than punk

At The Drive In - Relationship of Command
Snapcase - Progression Through Unlearning

These are among my favorite albums, ever in any genre, and highly suggest for someone looking to get into a new band. If you like either Bad Religion or NOFX album, they both have literally a dozen others, and have been around for so long. Give the vocalist of NOFX a fair chance, he can be a bit off putting at first.

At The Drive in became Sparta, and then became The Mars Volta, which is likely their most successful rendition, but they tended to get more emo and strange throughout.

Bad Religion might be one of those bands that completely hits the nail on the head about modern politics, similar to Rage Against the Machine. If you really listen to it, they had this figured out 20 years before it happened, it's powerful and brilliant. The lead vocalist just got his 2nd PhD and is a professor at Cornell University. There's so much meaning behind the words.

TC I think stoner/doom metal is probably the most accessible way to get into metal. Generally heavy but the vocals arent always as harsh as what youd see in death and black

starting point would be something like Black Sabbath

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=boNNEoXdzIM

for me Mastodon was next, they do the combination of harsh and clean vocals without ever sounding too extreme

If you like more 'commercial' metal, check out

Mastodon - they're a good 1st timer band to get into heavier music; first 2 albums are heavy, next 2 are transitional, the next 3 are a little lighter
Gojira - their last 2 albums are more accessible; the earlier stuff is more death metal and nutty
Deftones - they're not metal but have been called nu-metal or alternative metal; they're one of the best bands of that era; check out the first 3 albums to start

If you want to take a dive into an extreme subgenre (ie. death metal), listen to

Mercyful Fate - they're kind of standard heavy metal with some glimpses of black metal and other extreme genres; listen to Melissa and Don't Fear the Oath albums; you may or may not like the high pitch vocal style of King Diamond (the singer)
Slayer - they're thrash metal, but they're the gateway to crazier stuff; check out their 80's and early 90's stuff
Death - to me, the best classic death metal band ever; 7 awesome albums
Morbid Angel - first few albums are iconic death metal album; they're pretty nutty for a first timer

I would also add Nine Inch Nails. They're not quite metal but they have some heavy s*** to ease you into it. The Broken EP is a heavy mothereffer and Pretty Hate Machine and The Downward Spiral have their moments mixed into some more artsy stuff. With Teeth is later on but more straight ahead and probably easier to get into. But not as good.
