I previously posted a topic on June 25th titled "The US has had more new cases in the last 3 days alone than Canada has had total".

At that point, the US had about 106k new cases in the previous 3 days combined, while Canada had had about 103k total.

Now, just over a week later, the US has over 110k new cases in the previous 2 days combined, while Canada is only at about 105k total.

This is truly beyond fucked.

I mean our country isn't perfect and the mass ignorance regarding the pandemic is stupid, but this comparison is nonsensical.

The city of Tokyo alone has more people than Canada.

I had to look that up because I didn't believe it.

I had no idea Tokyo has that many people.

The differences in population aren't anywhere close enough to make up for this discrepancy.

Florida, one single state with a population of around 21.5M, posted almost 11.5k new cases today by itself.

Canada, with it's population of about 37.6M, never even came close to a single-day increase like that across the entire country combined (the highest was about 2800). You would have to go back to the beginning to June to measure a 11.5k new case count in Canada at this point.

You're comparing a sparsely populated country to a densely populated state. The US is definitely in full moron mode, but the comparison just really doesn't work.

I've said it before. California's population is more than the entire country of Canada. Canada is much less populated in their "large" cities. This is stupid to compare.

Agreed. Are there a lot of dumb Americans who aren't paying nearly enough attention to the pandemic? Sure, but a lot of places in the US were always going to get hard just because of population density (NYC) no matter what.

toronto has roughly 3 million people while jacksonville is the most populated city in florida with less than 1 million.

canada doesn't have anyone nearly as dumb as trump/desantis/gop which is why they handled it much better

Let's not pretend human stupidity is confined to one geographic area. Forget that at your own peril when would-be Trumps etc. start to rise up. Trump was laughed at when he joined the Republican primary and told the world he could shoot someone in broad daylight and maintain the support of his supporters.

People aren't laughing at that now that's it's quite clear that's true.

Bullshit. I live in a city with a higher density than NYC. Very few deaths.

I like how the defence is "Canada's population is lower than the US". Yea, it's lower, it's 10% but why is Canada getting way less than 10% of the cases that the US is getting?

It's not that there aren't dense populations in Canada btw, the country is just as urbanized as the US.

Canada has had something batshit crazy like 80% of all its deaths coming from long-term care facilities as well. Last I remember the US was somewhere in the low-to-mid-30s itself.

@lurk Name your city or you're a liar.

NYC is the highest in the US plus has extra problems like millions of people who rely on public transportation which makes it even worse for a pandemic.
