Keep in mind that it is possible for a person to get tattooed with an infection (yeast infection or UTI for example) already in their body and not know it.

Unfortunately said infection can spread to the tattoo even if the actual tattoo application and aftercare was performed correctly. This happened to a client of mine who ended up going to the emergency room after developing a fever due to having a UTI. The tattoo became infected and swelled like the dickens and did not heal properly.

Wednesday, the tattoo itself is not swollen and is showing no other signs of infection, and the swollen area (near my elbow, tattoo is on my inner forearm from my wrist to the edge of ditch) is not red, hot, or sensitive. Could it be from straining my arm to keep it elevated/off of other surfaces and my body?

the swollen area indents if pressed and does not hurt, and is only on my forearm side of the elbow.

Oh yeah, it's not infected, or doesn't sound like it is. If it was it would be red and puffy. You would likely have a beast of a temp and a headache too.

The swelling is completely natural but likely pushed the skin to it's limit considering how big your tattoo is, based on your description.

I was going to ask if the tattoo wrapped around the arm, I've seen tattoos that cover large patches of skin swell like crazy. That's just a ton of meat to have blasted at once.

It's just normal tattoo trauma caused by the punch of the needles.

Very rare but I also have seen some clients have a reaction to Aquaphor but it's more of a skin irritation thing and advise them to switch to fragrance-free lotion.

The ditch always swells, just make sure you keep it moist or it will get crumbly on you.

Don't fucking touch it.

Just keep it clean with antibacterial liquid hand soap and a thin layer of Aquaphor.

Larger tattoos carry a higher likelihood of infection because of the amount of raw, exposed flesh.

Keep it away from pets or areas where pets lay also.

I know not to touch the tattoo but I mean the swelling, a few inches away from any inked skin; Ive poked it a few times to see like... what the hell is going on lol. Doesnt hurt and it slowly rises back out and its fuckin gross. Been diligent cleaning it and applying aquaphor (was using a bit too much at first but we good now), likely switching over to good ol lubriderm tonight. Been EXTREMELY careful about keeping anything from touching the tattoo, to the point the rest of my arm has gotten sore and tired a few times lol.

this tattoo has been healing way more painlessly than any of my others, which also made this confusing.

Every body has different skin. Some people also swell and bleed like a pig when tattooed. I bet your tattoo guy was stressing, lol, you sound like a sweller.

If the swelling continues, you can put an ice pack on it to bring swelling down but never ice it for more than 15 minutes.

Good news arm boob is actually starting to dissipate it would seem

bad news fucking girl at kfc just spilled mtn dew DIRECTLY DOWN MY SLEEVE, ON MY ARM. Thankfully its only a few minutes from home, so I was able to wash it fairly quickly, and I rolled up the sleeve iff the tat until I got there, but still not very ideal!

@Wii_Shaker you have been knowledgable so far sorry to ping you again but how bad is this if I got it right off the tattoo lol

I had something similar happen with one of my leg tattoos. Tattoo is on my calf, but my foot ended up swelling pretty bad, where I could put dents in it like yours. I think it was just some sort of fluid that went down into my foot, and I was able to get the swelling down by laying on my stomach and sticking my leg up against the wall, so gravity would get the fluid or whatever out of my foot.

Damn I think it actually is infected, its starting to scab normally, but there are spots where its like pitted and not scabbing that still ooze ink/leave color when dabbed with a paper towel. Its mostly on shading, and most of it on black ink, so its tough to tell a color to any discharge beyond the ink being left, but on some of the green spots theres this very slight yellowing to the spot thats oozing.

really hope I can get an antibiotic and save my tattoo :/

Dr gonna look at it today, hopefully since its just on the shading it can heal up fine and be touched up

dr didnt think it looked too bad, but also that what I see is definitely concerning and said an anti biotic couldnt hurt, so im now rockin & rollin with some oral meds

hopefully my shit can still heal up nice

It doesn't sound too bad. If it were crazy infected, I'm sure you would know.

I'm curious about the pitting and chunky healing spots.
