The flip phone era technically really started once the Motorola Razr came out in 2004, but it only lasted about 3 years until the first iPhone came out in 2007 and started the Smartphone era we're still in to this day.
Why do you think the flip phone era was so short in comparison to the current Smartphone era we're in now?

Because the tech developed until it reached the most convenient design, at which point focus shifted into aspects of that design, rather than trying to invent a whole new system.

I feel like flip phone existed before razr but I don't know enough to dispute it

They did, but the Razr was the first really big and well known flip phone, just like the iPhone is the first really big and well known Smartphone. Smartphones technically existed before the iPhone, its just that the iPhone was the first to really take off and start the Smartphone era.

Flip phone era was like 01 to 05. But also a lot of people had the slide out sidekick type phones.

When you put it that way I'm not sure that the flip phone era existed. The draw of the razr wasn't the flipping, it was the profile and sleekness.

80's brick > small brick > flip phone > smartphone

I could never go back to regular phones. Carrying around a supercomputer all day and never needing to be bored for a single second of my life is an amazing jump in quality of life.
