Something a lot of people don't talk about is this. It's hard to find / keep a professional job there because it's so competitive. You're disposable, so if you screw up, they can easily replace you. This is because everyone and their mother wants to be there. Also, it's hard to find regular jobs because people are willing to take any kind of job just to be there.

It's also easy to develop addictions (such as drugs, prostitution, partying) because it's so readily available there. My brother developed a drug addiction and almost OD'd once, after he had been there for a while.

So it's not that great. The good thing about it is if you are young and single, it's really easy to meet people there. That's really all it has going for it though.

I've got no friends so that'd be a plus, but if it's so competitive then shit what's the point

You're sort of contradicting yourself a bit. If people were getting fired from professional jobs all the time there would be a lot of openings to replace them and probably easier to get a job. If it was hard to get fired people would stay at these jobs longer and there would be less vacant positions.

I don't know what fields of professional jobs you're talking about, but Austin has a lot of jobs in various shades of the tech industry and those jobs have a high turnover rate in general. It doesn't seem very unique to Austin.

Easy to find a job, hard to keep it. If you don't work out for them, they can easily replace you.

Yeah that's most jobs. If you aren't working out, catching on, you get let go. I'd find it hard to believe if it's a professional job that people who have been there for years and understand the business and have technical skills can just be replaced easily. You'd probably have to underperform for a while to be let go.

The problem is you have all of these people moving there from New York / California that have a shit ton of degrees and certifications. So yeah, it actually is pretty easy to replace those people.

Lol, yeah. Degrees and certifications, that'll make up for years of experience in a business..okay.

Pretty much no traffic at all. But our hotel was pretty much 5-10 minutes from Downtown so whenever we'd Uber we'd get everywhere fast.

That's my opinion tho having come from SD and had my share of trips to LA. LA traffic is so shit. Maybe an hour and a half to get to the city limits and then another hour just to get anywhere

Slowpac is hell, and I-35 is notorious for being one of the worst stretches of Interestate in the nation through Austin.

Like I said, we were pretty much in the heart of downtown or pretty damn near close to it. Rarely had to use the freeways outside of going to our lodgings from the airport. I don't have any reason to lie about your traffic lol

No traffic where, from your hotel to the restaurant down the street? I can buy that. But if you're telling me there was none going in or out of Austin, or none in downtown, then yeah, that's BS. I'd have to see it to believe it.

Why
I live in Albany NY where its just a shitty city - I have people that want to come visit me and I can't think of a single thing to do with them when they come because the city is lame af with not much to do. NYC living is trash where you have to get 3-4 roomates for a decent apartment in harlem. LA is a cesspool of homelessness. Austin at least seems like a beautiful city with shit to do with nice sized condos that I can afford.

Oh and my cousin got a job at Blizzard down there and he said he just loves it there so that's my big push to go there versus other cities.

I visited Austin in late '18 thanks to a cheap Frontier flight. It was pleasant enough, but I didn't love it and strongly prefer Dallas as far as TX goes.

No disrespect to anyone who wants to move there - you could do a lot worse! - but I definitely see cities like Austin, Portland and Asheville as places where "the ship has sailed". Moving to a high-demand city amidst a recession and pandemic is not a risk I'd be willing to take, unless I received a mondo job offer. Until the economy is on solid ground again, I'd rather hole up somewhere that's enjoyable but under-the-radar. Kansas City, Evansville, Wichita, somewhere like that.

It is, but you might have to get 2 lower paying jobs to afford one. I agree though, NYC is trash.

That's true, ship really has sailed as far as Austin is concerned. I might make a road trip once in a while if the wife sees a restaurant she wants to try, but that's it. Probably not even that, now that COVID is a thing. My point is that Austin is over rated. Everyone makes it sound like it's heaven on earth, but it's not that great. Only reason to move there is to meet women.

I don't think I would move there for a 'mondo job offer' though. It's hard to keep jobs like that there, you're competing with the whole damn country for a job in that city.

Btw, fuck Kansas. I hate that state with a passion.

Thank you!

And honestly, I think it's overrated as far as meeting women goes. The girls here seem really picky. I've had better luck with Dallas or Houston girls tbh.

Aww, I liked Wichita a lot. I only visited the Missouri side of Kansas City, though, so I can't vouch for the Kansas side.

The small towns suck unless you are white. Also, I used to work on the Missouri River, and both Kansas cities suck. Never been to Wichita, but if it's racist / run down like the other parts I've been to, no thanks.

The DFW is one of the best places I've ever lived. Never an issue finding work, cheap housing, generally a pretty liberal area. I really dont understand the appeal of Austin. You can go to higher end clubs in Dallas or have that smaller bar hopping feel in Fort Worth.
