Best job I ever had. Too bad the owner was a plank and mismanaged the store into bankruptcy after 2 years :(

But at least I got a shitload of free MtG merch.

Oh ama i guess

when i was in college i worked at one of the biggest mtg card distributors in america
not sure if they're still in business or not
mtgfanatic.com i think was the site
couple of brothers ran it and they spent money like water, younger 20s guys

nice. I quit my job at a card shop in January because the old owner took on a partner who thought the ability to write a check was better than years of actual experience.

in hindsight, I wish i had stuck it out for another month, but I was sick of being abused.

The name sounds familiar.

Did you ever have that weird kid that came into the shop like every day to just stare at one item?

it was a super decent job
just pulled cards from their massive library and packed orders all day to ship
would take breaks and smoke blunts with this really ghetto dude named charles who was awesome
we'd play nba 2k on slow days and hang out
the brothers were cool bosses overall

Yes and we actually had this really entitled lady that would just drop her 2 kids off at the shop for a day like we were some kind of daycare. They were mostly quiet and spent a lot of their parent's money so the owner allowed it.

mtgfanatic fell off the rails at the end. taking buy orders and not paying for months. sending back cards that dropped in value. cancelling sales on cards that spiked before getting shipped. just completely destroyed their reputation (and eventually business) in a few months over a few bucks. was sad to see.

oh that's a bummer and kinda fucked up
like i said, they were young and i always kinda felt like they were in over their heads
they lived in like maine or something and made a bunch of money running the site out of their parents basement
so they moved to houston, got a warehouse kinda storefront-y thing and took it to the next level
guess they couldn't sustain it

I can smell the store from here.

Honestly, I have dabbled in MtG, but there is something about stores that cater to that crowd that develop a particular smell that worms its way into the walls and carpet.

Fortunately we didn't have that issue. It was mostly college kids that knew how to bathe. We did have the sign that said we have the right to ask the smellies to leave.

That is quite sensible.

Before it was refurbished, my friendly local game store smelled like... well, my wife would always wait in the car. See also the store that sold retro games that would also host MtG tournaments on the weekend. I never understood how it would be possible to forget to bathe so often that you actually managed to soil a store with your presence.

Yeah but we didn't keep them in the store. Owner had a set of power 9 in the bank. The store was burgled once and the thief only stole individual cards and the store's binder. They only stole MtG cards too. No pokemon or yugioh.

After that we installed cameras and did a thorough sweep of the store at closing.
