I mean it was okay... but really that ending was quite weak, basically that really long tedious lighthouse where you fight Cid was meant to be the final dungeon (?) and the Bahamut never really became much of a final dungeon, not to mention Vayne being the villain was just weak and no rhyme or reason for anything and the whole "reigns of history back in the hands of man" stuff they kept spouting.

Just really disappointing, as there was so much potential in this game.

But as for actually playing it, I had fun for the most part, enjoyed finally doing all the marks this time like Gilgamesh.

You can really tell from the story and cutscenes that they didnt have enough time to truly finish the game imo. The pacing in the last 3rd or so is really bad, and the quality dips

This is why upper management shouldnt tell their creative staff how to do their jobs (rewriting the games story at the 11th hour to include vaan as the new main character). They should focus on something else like marketing or some shit

Right? And I feel like it's obvious just where that dip is, that last third as it were.

But even throughout the game, it's little things like not enough cutscenes and development given to Basch, who really should have been allowed to speak more, and instead weird faffing about scenes given to Vaan and/or Penelo, with jokes that obviously fall flat like Vaan asking Fran her age (ha ha I guess?)

The whole thing with Gabranth was ridiculously rushed and hilarious. They didn't even address the elephant in the room, Gabranth killing Ashe's father, even if it was under orders from Vayne (who was he even loyal to, Vayn or the actual emperor? It doesn't seem clear)

Just bought it on Steam a few days ago. Will jump on it as soon as I'm done with Xenoblade.

I can imagine if it was Basch or Balthier as the lead, any of whom would do and would have been more interesting to see. Basch not being the lead basically had him being shunted off to the side after his escape and revealing he's alive to the marquis. Btw that whole plot seems pointless in hindsight and what was even the point of the subterfuge of having that whole framing Basch, imprisoning him and not killing him, how that possibly affects marquis ondorre and in what way, etc etc.

The whole political intrigue in Archadia with the judges, the senate, Vayn wanting to seize power, that also could have been really cool if they'd just developed it further, it could have been something badass like Julius Caeasar levels of epic. But nope it's just "oh we could easily frame them for having killed the emperor and seize full power" like how does that work. All elements of suspense, gone.

It also upsets me that they just scrapped the ADB battle system after this. I felt like it was a great foundation for the future of the series.

Well I like Gambits, I definitely enjoy the idea of pre-planning and arranging orders for my party members to attack while I micromanage only when necessary.

BUT I didn't like this battle system when it was done by games like ni no kuni, which I despised because it felt like a stationary action rpg. So just as hectic as an action rpg but with the wait times of a turn based rpg, so the worst of both worlds; neither a true action rpg where you can dodge/defend and attack at will, nor a regular turn based rpg where you have time to sift through your menus.

I liked both Xenoblade and FF 12, which implemented things that made their games fun, but I haven't liked copycats of their type of battle system.

I havent enjoyed any of the FF battle systems since 12. 13 and 15 were trash comparatively imo

Wouldn't know, didn't play 15. 12 is pretty much the last game I bought from square enix. They haven't done anything I've liked since. Which is why it stings that this game had so much unrealized potential.

Decided to try my hand at trial mode. I made it all the way to stage 100!

But goddamnit all, that onslaught of all 5 judges basically just wrecked me. I needed just a tiny breather to collect myself after the battle in stage 99 but nooo, the game thrusts me right in the middle of the next stage, without even letting my spell animation complete its course.
