They were still selling books when E-bay was selling everything else.

Probably implemented consumer protections first. That and it's extremely easy to get full refunds and returns if you get it through Amazon.

Customer service.

Ebay, for a long time, was known as a sort of sketchy yard sale. Sometimes you get what you want. Sometimes you don't. It was a pain dealing with any issues.

One time Amazon shipped me something broken. They said they would pay for a box and send it to me to ship back (for free) and give a replacement. I told them that I working nights and didn't have time to run to the post office. They sent a UPS driver to my house to pack and pick up my package. For free.

Doesn't matter if it's from Amazon or a third party seller, Amazon will always have the customers back. Bad for businesses, but good for consumers

Many listings are buy it now with free shipping. Plus even the bids you can do automatically to a max price if you want (that's what i do but I almost never win lol).

More professional and functional user interface. If eBay and Amazon were major retailers eBay would be like Wal mart and Amazon would be like target.

Because Amazon was an online store and eBay was an online auction site. Even as eBay evolved to be more of a store, they were still known as an auction site.

Also Amazon's leadership and investment in tech is really second to none.

I view Amazon like a department store. I view eBay as my guilty pleasure for my hobbies and obsessions.

What kind of question is this? One was a store and eBay was a bunch of random motherfuckers. eBay didn't actually sell anything.

Years later Amazon added their own sellers, but that's not how it was the first decade.

FBA plus an easy way to address grievances with a bad product versus having to deal with individual people made it much more consumer friendly.

eBay tried to do the same thing with Half.com but by that time it was too late.

Even today eBay hasn't learned jack shit from their loss to Amazon by dumbassingly adding seller fees, which slashed their userbase in half.

This is exactly the issue. Even to this day people still think Ebay is just an auction site, where a huge portion of it is products you can just purchase at a set price and have it shipped, just like Amazon. I haven't bid on Ebay in years but have made hundreds of purchases.

Their marketing kind of sucks, they didn't do well to inform people that you can come buy things like any other online retailer, and they have full purchase protection.

Same here. Buy it now has been a godsend for those games which aren't at gamestop.
