I actually really like the first game's box art for the PS3 version. It looks really pretty, in a desolate kinda way. If I got any enjoyment out of zombie apocalypse scenarios then I'd almost want to give it a proper try just because the box art looks that good. Part 2's box art though? Blech. If it wasn't attached to a popular IP I'd never give a game with that box art the time of day.

I really hate it. The first game's art was pretty nice. A bit generic, but good, especially by today's standards.

Game box art has been that way for a while. There's a vid about it on yt. General idea is that older games lacked the visuals to attract people so fancy painted box art represented the ideal the game was portraying which isn't as important now, especially with digital.

Thing that really bugs me is that Naughty Dog actually FOUGHT for the first game's boxart. Marketing was against it, especially because it had Ellie in the forefront and having girls on the cover is a huge no no according to marketing. Just look at BioShock Infinite, who also had to fight for their right to boxart, but ended up losing.
So they did care about that first game's art enough to make a stand and get their way.
