I miss good episodic shows, now everyone needs to have season, or even series arcs.

It did have season arcs, though. It was like most shows, where episodes have individual plots but they also sometimes progress the story arc for the season.

It's really a good one. It's kinda formulaic but it's carried soooo far by the acting and writing,

House did it right though, it had background season arcs. Like season 2 had the douchey hospital investor, season 3 had the obsessed cop, and things would happen with them around the main plot of the weekly sick person, instead of the other way around.

Yeah, House did a good job of building its plots so everything kind of felt natural.
It fell off hard after Season 6, of course, but outside Season 7 (pre-Masters) it never got bad. They even started subtly ribbing the fact that all the patients follow the same trajectory(that one Wilson-centric episode is hilarious, because there's a ridiculous House episode going on in the background.)
Plus, the chicken bet was amazing.

It had good characters and catty remarks, but it got too formulaic for me. Everything was basically:

  • Go to work in the morning
  • Brainstorm why patient X has disease Y
  • All the guesses are wrong, including lupus
  • Do some tests; patient's condition worsens suddenly
  • Brainstorming, Pt. 2 -- all answers are, again, wrong
  • House does some normal doctoring work and insults his patients and/or makes fun of Wilson
  • Patient takes a turn for the worse-r and might die
  • House notices some quirk in their behavior that leads to a crazy conclusion that just might work!
  • Crazy conclusion does, in fact, work
  • House trudges home to some rock song and we see how lonely his shell of a life is

Yeah I think they realized it and became self aware by season 4, thats why they completely turned the show on its head by having the 3 original team members quit/get fired and have a season dedicated to finding replacements and having the original 3 end up doing new stuff at the hospital.

Really theres only so many ways a medical drama plot can go, either theyre cured or they die.

It was super formulaic, but the characters and interactions among them were so good that it didn't matter. Hugh Laurie as House was utterly amazing.

It used to be on Netflix once upon a time, but after not finding it on any streaming service I said fuck it and bought the digital series bundle on Vudu.
