I forget the details but

Light loses is the main reason people get pissed. He was the villain but he was also the protagonist and people like to root for the protagonist. we spent the whole series cheering on Light and loving how he keeps defeating each problem. and then it all ends with his failure. people don't watch anime for that. we like to see victories.

The live action movie ending was best

L beats Light, but sacrifices his life in the process.

It had a great 36 episode run. I would have loved to see the outcome for each character, but Light's line at the end was a good enough conclusion.

My issue with it is that I was invested in Light vs L. I had no investment in Light vs Near vs Mello.

The ending of the 2nd live action film was better, although not so different other than the timing and characters involved.

Nah Light deserved to lose, the story is better for it. But the way he lost was anti-climactic. He knew from the beginning that trusting someone else with his secret would be a bad idea, but he did it anyway. And at the end, it's just a double switcheroo. If Misa or Mikami had accidentally killed Light in a way that showed that Light's hubris or other actions caused his death, the ending would have been more satisfactory.

And this is why we have so many OP as fuck main characters with predictable endings. No matter who the bad guy is, you know the main guy is going to win.

We knew Naruto would be Hokage. Luffy will obviously be Pirate King, etc. Because of simpletons.

In an attempt to drag the series on for longer than necessary, the whole thing felt weak. Either letting Light simply win, or implementing a similar scene but involving L would have been better than what happened with two inferior characters getting the win.

Because Near and Mello are lame substitutes for L. If they were gonna kill L off just to replace him with these wannabes, it should have just ended with Light beating L.

Don't they kill the protagonist's main rival off and then replace him with a previously unknown carbon copy? There are certainly better ways to end a story.

Big difference between OP MC used well, like Overlord, and OP MC that's trash, like In Another World with My Smartphone or The Irregular at Magic High.
Also, I think Luffy and Naruto are not supposed to be OP by default. Naruto certainly struggles up until shippuden. They are supposed to have a hero's journey - you know where they end up, the excitement is how they get there.
