Well I assume many people will feel they have to go back if asked to or risk being fired. Idk if fearing Covid is considered a valid reason, I guess if you have a condition that puts you at higher risk or you have children or live with an elderly person.

Well I'm not sure what you're talking about here, AFAIK most people are just getting the state and federal unemployment amounting to around $800/wk after taxes

If any state that has benefits of $600+, they could. Like NJ or Connecticut has high UI benefits. This has the max amounts including PUC.

I mean if you make over $53K or so in NY you qualify for the max benefits. I was making more than that and it was similar to my net pay (but then I had health insurance, 401K contributions, transit benefits, FICA deducted first).

I mean these benefits should probably have been calculated based on the average cost of living of each state or something like that. 50k is more than enough in most places; San Francisco is an outlier. I would go so far as to say the 600/wk is far too generous in most places.

That's the "whatever state gives" part of my response. No one at all is making a flat 1200 in addition to the state unemployment amount.

I'm making 600 + Massachusetts maximum which is 823 a week. So I'm making over 1200, but not 1200 plus what MA gives me.

And to get that, I made a good deal more when I was working than I do laid off. No one who was making minimum wage is suddenly pulling in 60k no matter how you slice it.

I'm not sure why you think this to be honest. It's a well known fact that around 70% of people on unemployment are making significantly more now than when they were working.

With the original bill, there was a proposal for caps and means testing rather than a blanket 600. However, most states run their unemployment services on an archaic platform and running those calculations and setting up the system to give accurate amounts would have cost more than overpaying people.

I don't doubt this is true, if you're only looking at the short term. In the long run, though, wouldn't they save a substantial amount by giving accurate amounts in future situations by having updated platforms? I guess they wouldn't have been able to justify the time it would take to do so, though, given the pressure that was on them to distribute aid

Oh, and as far as the OP, people are going back to work at a great pace. May saw two and a half million people go back to work with unemployment dropping massively. Combined with the stock market already rebounding past 25,000, we're looking to be in good shape.

Even if we assumed you were going to make 60k a year on unemployment (very few will make that much) you don't really have a choice about going back to work or not. If your job calls you back you have to give up your unemployment benefits.

Thats kind of the situation my girlfriend and I are in. My hours are reduced, but not enough to get unemployment. And she lost her job. Shes making bank at the moment, even more than me, and I hope she gets called back to work at the end of July. But if she could get back to work right now that would be far more reassuring.

^Im in that situation except reversed. My wife is the one working and im the one on unemployment. Im hoping jobs open up in my industry soon because I have no idea what im gonna do once unemployment is over.
