I said I have a cat. She said she knows that, and asked again what type of cat. I said it's a white cat with colors on it. She sighed, looked at the cat, then told me it's a domestic short hair calico cat.

There are a number of easily identifiable distinctive breeds, but, yes, I agree that on a general basis many more people likely have little care about generic-looking cat breeds.
