Remember when it was used predominantly to kill people or achieved a certain kind of victory. Well, not anymore. He now always leave nen of of equation in certain scene like Netero using the virus rose bomb that infect entire ant colony and Hagya-sama gasping for air for lack of oxygen. It makes as it seems like Togashi wanted to tell us even with full mastery of nen, mother nature and human technologies will always trump the application of nen. I hate this because it makes nen as useless as the writer wanted it to be and appearance of specialist like tsederich makes me think togashi isnt trying to make more compeling villain like razor who used emmitter attribute to its maximum potentials

but the hunter exam 'killed' some people for not being good enough to tackle dangerous situations, it also pushed the body's limit and removed those who might have not potential to use nen effectively, and not everyone is lucky to have a team or admirers that helped them on the tests

Gon and the others might have an abundant amount of gourmet luck for them to get pass the exam. Just like naruto not being caught in the written exam for not copying hinata's exam sheet back when naruto was good
