Its generally the same game with different "rosters". You do the same thing, the goal is the same, but they release 2 or 3 full price versions of it at once and no one really questions it. I feel like if any other company did that they'd get torn to shreds, but when it comes to pokemon people seem to have no issue buying it more than once at the same time.

The Pokemon Company knows that its fanbase would purchase a literal packaged turd if the Pokemon brand was slapped on it. Consumer whores with pathetically NO standards.

Because trading has always been a staple of the series. There wouldnt be any reason to trade with anyone if you could get everything in one game.

Because the original goal was for people to have friends and you'd have one version and they'd have the other version and you could trade for the mons you don't have.

Mind boggling concept I know

This meant something back in the day, but with the internet and social media, trading is a paltry exchange.

But also, yes, Nintendo is aware of a bunch of moocows willing to buy both games.

ok that may be the original goal of the designer, but its not how anyone plays anymore (typically). most people just buy all the games. and they're happy to do it.

There hasn't been a real point to buying both versions of any Pokemon game past gen 3 outside of collection reasons. Once they added online trading you can always get the version exclusives easily.

I agree, I was just curious as to why people give Nintendo/Pokemon a pass but would review smash any other developer if they did it.

Why this defensive reaction/non-answer?

Because Pokmon did it first and have become intensely associated with the concept.

Also the right conditions can no longer really be met for the concept to take off again.

Its marketing. by releasing 2 different "colors" or "versions" they accomplish a lot of good.

-Siblings can get the same game, but different enough they can always tell who's is who's.
-Siblings/Friends can trade; it promotes the idea of having friends.
-Creates artificial replayability by allowing you to go through the different versions with different team restrictions*
-Allows people to "vote" which side is better, creating a rivalry between people.

It does create a lot of bad, most of that shouldn't need to be spelled out.

*Its easier for some people to not have to self impose; like in R/B/Y getting a Growlithe was important for the 4th gym if you chose Blastoise; he wasn't present in Blue so you had to change your strategy. Some people may never have done that if they didn't have to.
