German Shepherd, they are very intelligent, loyal, trainable, and have a firm understanding of their responsibility to you as a guard dog. That's why police use them, and you never hear about any incidents of "K-9 goes off the handle and attacks random bystander"

They have a history of being used in other countries, and the military also.

They are great with kids too. So many people think they are bad around kids. I was gonna get one about 2 years ago. Now I don't know if I really want a dog. Too much work and commitment.

Probably a german shep or a rottie.

Both extreamly loyal dogs. German Shepards are smarter, but rotties are bigger

I'll add you to the list of people who will eventually give an interview to the local news consisting of something like "I don't understand how this could happen, he was such a well-behaved dog"

If you're a homeowner, check with your insurance first to see what breeds they cover. In some states pitbulls and rotties aren't covered so if someone gets hurt or something gets destroyed you'll owe the full damages out of pocket.

https://www.valuepenguin.com/homeowners-and-renters-insurance-with-a-pit-bull
The liability portion of most home and renters insurance policies provide financial protection against damage or injuries caused by your pets. However, insurance companies apply different rules to pit bulls.

While some providers such as State Farm don't have any dog breed restrictions, others like Esurance will deny all liability coverage for incidents involving pit bulls. In these cases, hiding your pit bull is not an option: If you fail to inform your insurance provider that you own a "dangerous breed", it may have legal grounds to deny any claim you make even claims not related to liability.

EDIT: For context on cost
https://www.trustedchoice.com/insurance-articles/home-family/home-insurance-pit-bull/
The average insurance payment for a dog-related injury is just over $21,000. Dog bites accounted for more than a third of all homeowners insurance liability claim dollars in 2011, and insurance companies dole out more than $1 billion in dog bite claims each year.

Two excellent choices, and they don't fly off the handle for no reason like inferior pitbulls

They are known for not being a good dog with children in the house, and are not tolerant to being climbed on or yanked on. Otherwise yes, they are one of the lesser spoken about guard dogs that can get the job done, especially in a real event.
