Pat Tillman was an amazing safety who gave up his career to join the war in 2002 and died in combat, sadly by friendly fire.

Pat Tillman = retired from the NFL in his prime to join the military, died in service.

Colin Kaepernick = turned down NFL contracts (coming off a season in which he was 1-10 as a starting QB), then pretended like he was blackballed from the league.

Not seeing any similarities.

Exactly. He chased big money and ultimately failed. Tillman sacrificed money several times for loyalty to his team and then again to his country. People talk about wanting to change policing but they never want to BE the change. They want someone else to do it for them. They can go sign up for a job in law enforcement and be the change they want. All celebrities are full of talk but no action.

if you believe that police brutality, racism, etc. is a systemic issue; that it's all rotten down to its roots, then joining the police force isn't going to elicit the kinda change that you're looking for.

but saying that he doesn't vote, or something, was a bad look.

Actually I think it would have. It could have started a wave of people (without criminal records) of saying "Colin Kaepernick is really trying to make that change happen, I will try to join the police and help make a change." It could have been quite inspirational and he would have garnered much more respect. The thing with throwing money at the problem is not everyone has money they can just throw away like that but joining the police was a tangible thing others could have done.

You realize democrats supported the war in Iraq too right? Tillman believed in serving his country in the hardest times even if he disagreed with larger decision makers on both sides that way overstayed their welcome in Iraq.

Don't spread stupid conspiracies. As corrupt and evil Chaney was why would he try to have Pat tillman assassinated? That is beyond stupid. He got killed by friendly fire and it was covered up for the bad publicity or on the best case to protect the person who did it. This does happen in combat and they don't release the names of the people.

So he gave charity? Tons of rich people give tons of charity. Not to say it might not be a good thing, but there is a difference in giving Charity that helps your reputation in certain circles and fucking throwing everything away to serve in the most difficult time possible. Tillman wasn't getting Nike endorsement deals and praising communist dictators either.

Pat Tillman is a rare example of a man who achieved his dream and gave it up in service of something greater than himself. He was a true hero and the manner of his death is a horrid tragedy. It's sad that had to be so horrible that it distracts from what he did while he was alive, in service to a country that he loved even if it wasn't always doing what he agreed with.
